Stuck piston ring

Grandma is going to have none of that, and Mrs Bent says cars aren’t supposed to go sideways

:dunno:
But sideways was how I learned how to drive...Learn how to drive on dirt to begin with and your ability to control a car goes up a bunch. I mean, who doesn't like getting sideways at 70 on a dirt fire road...

She needs to watch Cars.. Turn right to go left...

I had a couple different theories before I posted.

GM crate ZZ4. Fresh synthetic oil
Only ticks and blows by, only when hot
This engine had the beans run out of it before we stuck it in moms SS

One theory was the ring stuck in the piston. Ticking with blowby

The other thing I hasn’t already mentioned but wondered about is the oil. So Wade and I were on the same page. Ticking and blowby because the oil is too thin
I tried some Mobil full synthetic once. Didn't care for it.
The engine that you built has no problems with Schaeffer's 5W-40 full synthetic diesel spec oil. Been running it since I bought the '72 from you.

That engine was snug. Builder said to use 30W, but that sucker also had 80 psi cold :dunno:

What pressure does it run on the 5w40?

It seems like it pegs the 60 psi gauge. I would assume that the cold psi is lower with this oil, but that doesn't bother me.
My main point was that different oils can definitely affect the engine. I put the Mobil in my big block. It sounds better with with the Schaeffer's. Oil temperature is better with it too.
I hope that you fix this problem with an oil change.

Would it be worth throwing some BG EPR in it before you dump the oil? The directions say to dump it in, bring the engine to operating temperature, hold the rpms up for 10 minutes, (2K, I believe) then dump it out hot. Might be worth it.

Haven’t had a chance. I’ll probably dump it and filter it, use it as make up oil in one of these other leaky oil burning bastards until I can get rid of it. I did come up with 4x five quart jugs of regular Valvoline

Well I wouldn't expect you to work on it today. :waytogo:

If you were to use the EPR, don't save the oil. It thins it out and flushes crap out of the engine.

Given the history of this engine, I’m going to try the heavier oil. Engine has approximately 8k miles on it. The rod and main bearings have already been changed. It donated about 4 seasons as the full time engine at the drag strip
Ran the best of 12.96 in a 3400 pound car with a power glide up here at altitude

And this is one of the reasons I don’t change my own oil.
You apparently have never experienced the stripped drain plug from having someone else do it. I have helped people deal with it, never happened on mine. I have bought a few trucks lately that they don't have the original magnetic drain plug anymore... Hmmm.
OH, and the oil spilled on the engine and smoking as you drive. I have heard of that!

Yeah took every strap wrench and water pump pliers I had to win. Headers don’t help. Was almost to the point of pulling it to get it off. No idea why the cap wouldn’t grab

It’s always those 20 minute jobs that bite you in the ass. I remember once when I was a kid we were going to a dinner for someone my mom worked with amd my dad said I’m gonna charge oil in the truck real quick before we get ready……mom says I don’t wanna be late, dad says no problem I’ll be done in a half hour….the filter fell off, hit the pan and dumped it all over the garage floor soaking his hair along with it. Needless to say by they time he got it all washed out and the mess cleaned up we were late for dinner and mom was not a happy camper, still brings it up every time he changes oil

I have had really good luck with this one. 1/2" drive breaker bar fits it. Can slide the strap to the base of the filter. Self adjusting and only gets tighter the harder you pull the bar or ratchet. Just clean the strap well if you get oil on it.

Broke that one. Thanks for the link to replace it

Their problem. Not mine. I despise fluid changes with a passion. All of them.

Ouch. That’s sucks.

I typically do my own, but I did have the guys at the shop do it out of convenience a lot. You bet I discovered items if I did a oil change after certain individuals did it. Sometimes too tight, sometimes not tight enough. The last guy I had doing it was consistent at least.

I’ll go back to doing my own now.
