I got tired of the sh!tty procomp hydro shocks I had on my rig so after reading Shawn's bit about stupid duty rear shocks working I went off to the parts store.. settled on a set of Monroe Gas-Matics for an '02 F350 Super Duty c&c 4x4 w/ 7.3L, part number 59578 $25.99 @ Shucks. I decided to only do the fronts for now, the rears seemed okay but they will be next.

And here's a comparison of the 4" lift Pro-Comp versus the Stupid Duty shocks:

The Monroe's were a good 6" longer than the Pro-Comps.. they measured roughly 27" expanded and 17" collapsed measured center of the eyes.

The only difference between these and the shocks ment for the Chevy is the sleeve in the lower shock eye is slightly too small, I think it must be a 12mm. I took a 1/2" drill bit and drilled them out a bit and it worked. I think my shocks had sat for a while since I couldn't remove the sleeves, but that didn't matter. I had to source my own sleeves for the upper eye but I just scavenged them off the old shocks.

I played with the travel flexing on a few things. Seems to be enough for my needs and my springs are now the limiting factor in my wheel travel, not my shocks, and the ride is 10x better than with the crappy pro-comps.

hmmmm... i'm going to have to go do some measurements now! thanks for posting!

My shackle angle is pretty sh!tty so I have barely any droop. It will stuff the tires though if I keep the wheels straight. Nice thing about running skinny wheels, I can keep my fenders on the street queen :D

A dumb question, I have Rancho shocks on my 73' Blazer with a 4" lift, and it rides stiff as hell, would the Monroe shocks be any softer?

I'll make a report tonight.. my front springs are Rancho 4" and I havn't driven it on any rough road since I put the shocks on, I did notice a massive difference in body roll, for the better. The more I read about lift kit shocks, the more I think those companies that don't include shocks are doing us a favor.

Looks like I forgot to post an update.. the ride difference is amazing. Now bumps only result in a single response versus flopping all over the damn road :haha:

It's just over all more pleasant to drive. The springs are a little stiff, but I kind of like that since I am not running a sway bar and am planning on crossover.

did they mount up ok?
i have sh*tty ranchos all they way around and they suck super terribly

Just like any other shock, just had to open up a sleeve a bit since I couldn't get it out of the bushing, the other bushing has the sleeve off so reusing a sleeve in that one worked. I'm sure if I had a press the lower sleeves would've popped right out :haha:

Did you do the rear yet? The shocks that I got with my rc lift don't look to have a whole of travel in them either and I'm leaning towards using some super duty ones?

I've done this to the rear of mine. Plenty of travel. Ride is great. Drill the one eye out and it'll slide right in. Much better ride then pro comp shocks.

Good deal, thanks for the info. Think I'll save the RC's for the stock 72 and go get some of these super duty one's for the Chalet.

Only thing I've seen trouble with at all is in stock position on some vehicles with a 14bff swap is the location of bottom mount. Sometimes they can come into contact with the axle tube and not allow it. Flipping them over solves that (with small cover over the rod or cutting original off) so make sure of fit before you start drilling. Mine worked with a little effort.

ok, just checking that i read this and comprehended it right. but are you guys running that same part number of monroe shock on all four corners???

02 super duty F350 rear shock.

The same vehicle as front and using the shocks ment for rear on the same vehicle. If they are the same number all the way around then sure.

Order rears for that truck if you're installing on rear.

Order rears for that truck if you're installing on rear.
Order front if you're installing on front.

The part number in first post should be correct for the fronts. I do not know if the rears are same number.

again I said it before

Order rears for that truck if you're installing on rear.
Since 2 go on the rear order 2. The number in first post order those for the front. Order 2 of those for the front

gotcha, so your running them in the same locations, front and rears, just on a K5 instead of a stoopid dooty. spank you much.
