Supercharger fix;guage & plugs question

Greetings! I finally bought a truck I have been wanting for a very long time. I just purchased a 1991 Burb, has a 350 and came with a Wipple supercharger. I have NO experience with superchargers other than seeing pictures. I understand that its not necessarily a simple bolt on and play deal, as far as the engine and upgrades. SO, I can reference some books in regards to reinstalling a TBI, however, Anything additional I need to know about removing the SC and reinstalling a stock TBI. Should I pull one from the Junk yard or?
Any thoughts on going to a Carb? Thanks, and Please take it easy on the new guy:rolleyes:

Im sceered of it...:dunno: I was just always lead to believe it wasnt a good thing on older worn motors.. Higher compressions ratios needed , free flowing exhaust , higher octane fuels etc.. I know nothing of them. I do know what the PO said the cable that downshifts the trans when you gun it wasn't connected. ( What I thought was the TV cable?).

I'm steady reading up on it all trying to get educated..

I just read "expect a reduction in fuel economy; how much depends on how the supercharged engine is driven. If boosted operation is infrequent, fuel mileage will be close to stock. If your driving habits require the engine to be boosted regularly, expect a reduction in mileage."
 
You would actually want a lower compression ratio with a supercharger, not higher. Also since a supercharger is driven off the engine it will create boost as rpm increases, not based on engine load like a turbo does. I also agree that you should keep it on, unless that is you want to pack it up and send it to me lol. Is it using a carb or fuel injection now? Pics would definitely get you more answers, and what your intentions are with the truck. You seem concerned with fuel costs so I'm assuming it's not a fun vehicle and more of a dd, what are your plans with it.
 
Thanks for the replies. This is not a DD, I intend on building/Finishing this truck as a weekend warrior/hunting/camping/expedition family hauler rig :D
I don't know much about superchargers, and if everyone thinks it should stay than i'm all in! I just didn't want an unreliable rig. I would like to be comforted in knowing I can drive this dude on 400 mile road trips a couple times a year.

I certainly agree! formally a Toyota guy and frequented the yotatech forums I love pics as much as the next! However, My first post and attempt to a couple pics was meet with a type of error code saying :

I will try this again next :waytogo: If in fact its good to keep the SC, and I can maintain reliability, well then I guess Ill need to ask about the two lone issues I have with it thus far, when I post a pic of course.

The PO states the cable not connected goes to the trans and is responsible for down shifting when you add skinny pedal. Being it not connected , the truck does not down shift in Drive when, taking a hill for example.

word of warning....you'd better hope it's been swapped to an older t350 that has a kickdown... the truck should have the 4 spd auto, 700r4.. if it is, and that tv cable is not set correctly, IT WILL NUKE THE TRANS IN SHORT ORDER!

congrats on the new toy... I'd leave the Whipple, just make sure everythings up to snuff.....
 
why not educate yourself on the engine and the charger, do the maintenance necessary. and keep the charger? i dont know much about them either but it wouldn't keep me from driving one for sure!
 
If it isn't broken, don't fix it.

Leave the 'charger alone.

Anywho.
I do believe its running the 700R4. At least that's what the Transmission repair bill from last year says. I certainly don't want another bill like that one. I did research about the TV cable a bit. I guess in my research, I assumed the truck wouldnt shift at all if it wasn't connected, or wouldn't shift in to 2, 3rd etc.:whistle: I did drive it about 7 miles home (no freeway). Its been sitting since till i know it good to go.

Any ideas on how its connected with a SC?

Am i correct in thinking it suppose to have a bracket or sorts? Ill get better pics later today after work, Im getting the rear end situated this next weekend with some seals n bearings, Hope to get the SC squared away soon enough too.

I am reading and educating myself as fast as I can :D I guess I am in that Maintenance processes now, making sure everything belongs an is hooked up correct.

I couldn't agree more! However, if there was a perfectly good bomb on my motor, and I knew about it, I recon I would want to go ahead and take care of that in my list of to do's lol. I am glad everyone agrees to keep it for sure!
 
From what i know, the whipple is fairly safe in comparison to some others as long as it isn't "over" boosted. I would think if it is maintained and not over boosted it would be perfectly reliable. In fact that is how they were marketed when new. Fuel octane is very important with them.

as well as a TV cable bracket. With the constant pressure VB the only thing your TV cable will do is set shift points. My concern with a non stock TV cable location and bracket is that the geometry of the Bracket and it's location could lead to less than ideal TV operation and eventually cost you another tranny. The constant pressure VB removes that risk and turns your TV cable into a adjust and fine tune tool for shift points.

I just snapped a few more photo's. This is kinda why I was considering ditching the SC, return to stock, and selling it for other "upgrades".

I certainly DO NOT want any tranny failures. It seems as the cables are a precise addition to good tranny shifting. Not that i wouldn't mind purchasing the Transmission Valve Body, But as y'all might see in the pics, the situation as of now is less than ideal!:confused:

I am looking for direction at this point. I have been searching for awhile now and can seem to find an appropriate bracket, nor do I think fabing one up would yield the precision required.

The blue indicated the PO's hand work of a bracket.
Anyone want to enlighten me as to the function of the two cables? Is one the TV and the second (disconnected) a drop down cable?
The red arrow obviously indicates the rotation of the linkage, has mostly slack on the connected cable about 70% of the way .

Your probably right. I didn't even think to check. I assumed it would have a ridged rod type connection lol So that would mean the 2nd cable would be the TV cable. Which is not connected!
