Swettysblazer's 1991 K5 Trazer: ONE TONS!

Brian, are you talking the tubs or the rear tailpan/corner post area?
The tubs I trimmed to fit the existing quarters (which have been replaced by some hack in the past) I tacked them in multiple spots then used seam sealer to fill in the seams....

The corner posts I cut up higher than stock, as I was raising my floor 2" to accomodate the larger fuel tank. If you need to cut up higher into the box corners you could cut to good metal, then piece in a new corner to get back down to stock floor height and tie in a new tail pan piece.
Here is the inside of the box corner with the new tailpan coming into it...be sure to leave an opening big enough to get your tailights through...

And a hole for the wiring to go through...

these are the body mounts I made for the rear tailpan....a little custom for my application of raised floor, but should be adaptable to stock as well...

Like I mentioned above, I just got a gas bottle for my welder. It's a 75/25 mix. I cannot, for the life of me, get this thing to weld anything. I switched the polarity on the welder like I am supposed to, made sure the gas is on, checked and double checked that I had the right wire, everything. Cleaned all the metal that I was working with and still nothing. I am getting absolutely no penetration whatsoever. I'm stumped. It's a Hobart 140 machine.

picture of what your welds look like? Where is your ground? Did you disconnect your battery?

Rich, my welds are too embarassing to show here. Lots of splatter, and I can literally take the "weld" off with my hand. I didn't weld on the truck yet, I was just practicing on some scrap steel I had laying around.

I'm guessing your ground clamped right on to the scrap and everything is wire wheeled or flapper disc sanded to shiny new metal? Usually when I have splatter I am too hot but that wouldn't explain penetration problems. Is the wire pushing against your hand and jumping or bouncing out out of the steel?

When I feel like I'm out of practice I grab a really thick piece and weld hot then work back down to the thin stuff.

Yeah, I made sure everything was clean..... I'll have to go look at it again later or tomorrow. I've got work in a little while and I need to get some stuff done before then.

Alright, when I start laying my embarrassing welds I'll take some pictures and make you feel better.

something's not right...

make sure the polarity is correct.. a piece of thick 1/4" clean steel... turn the machine ALL the way up... hold the tip 1/4" from the piece.. pull the trigger for 4 or 5 seconds.. if it's not burning a puddle there.. than something is wrong...

trying to lay beads, etc is all secondary, if that doesn't make a puddle, you need to figure out whats wrong..

it sounds to me like you are WAY too far away from the material.. closer means hotter..

I could get it to weld fine with the flux core. I'll try what you said tomorrow Paul thanks.

I'm the official moron of CK5, put the tip in, turn the gas on, and it works great.... Well, now I'm even more motivated than before now that I know that my welder isn't screwed up :haha: :haha: :haha:
