There is a 96 3500 that was dropped off at a local pick a part. It has I believe to be a nv4500. Yard wants $125plus $40 for the core but I have to pull it. Should I grab it? Or is there a good reason to leave it. I no nothing about the truck neither does the yard so it’s a chance either way. Mileage is also unknown. If I do grab it are there any parts/hardware that I shouldn’t leave behind? It is a 4x4 trans.

Grab it!!!
Make sure to get the bellhousing and shifter, of course.

I saw the thread title and was ready to bad mouth the NV4500 for you. But, a 4 wheel drive case and bellhousing for that price doesn’t get bad mouthed. I don’t remember which slave cylinder set up 95 was. Bottom passenger side external to the bell or inside the bell as the throw out bearing. Either way it is just a few bolts holding the master to the firewall and then a clip on the clutch pedal. Pull the entire hydraulic system too. You will be inside to pull the shifter out anyway.

I’m not what I used to be.
There was a point when I would give a Kennyw a run for his money.

Thats internal hydro .

Grab all you can for that price . Even the tcase if its cheep . Resale parts alone make some cash back .

That year truck if cluster in dash its mechanical od . So you can get a ball park .

Why are you asking? You already know the answer. Go get it.

Also, having witnessed the master of yard pull 4500’s aka @Capt Ron its totally doable to pull if you have the right stuff. I couldn’t stop laughing when I’m he did it. Short version is jamming a large prayer into the dash and resting the other side off of the top of the seat. Cut large hole in floor with sawzall. Ratchet strap around the trans to support it. Remove driveshafts and t case and then the crossmember. The trans is supported by the strap you already ran around it. Set a seat cushion below the trans and go back inside and yank back on the trans. Once clear of the bell, release strap and if you placed the cushion right it lands softly on it. Slide out from under and finish taking the bell housing off.

I’m not kidding when I say Ron had this done in under 30 minutes. He’s an animal. I’m laughing like an idiot the entire time.

Items to remember to take are the shifter handle and boot. Don’t loose the trans to bell housing bolts as they will not be in your local hardware stores metric bins. I’d take as much of the wiring to the reverse light switch as you can to make it easy to wire in to the other truck if you use it.

These things aren’t growing on trees anymore so to be all in on a 4500 for $165 is a score. Though depending on the yard if you leave the bellhousing separate they may charge you for it so put it back on before you go check out.

As said earlier get that transfer case if possible as well - the GMT-400 K3500’s came with the Borg Warner 44xx series rather than the NP241’s as a nice upgrade and most of them had a PTO port too.

Isn’t it driver side drop?

Are they mechanical shift or electric? Have they held up well?

My only complaint about a yard pull for a 4x4 4500 is how it’s supported. The crossmembers kinda sucks to fight if it’s not lifted well.
