tall deck big block info 366, 427

i've heard you don't want togo more than.060 with these but don't have a source to quote on that. from what i remember just boring to 4.000 was a stretch, however stroking is definitely possible since these motors share journal sizes with the 454.
 
well I've gone .100 over on a 454 before when I built my stroker

and these tjings are suppose to have uber thick walls right???
 
my point exactly, what would be the difference between a tall deck 427 and a passenger car 427...if your not planning on a 496 and going to leave the c.i.d. at 427?
 
yep uberliciously thick! it's possible i just haven't heard any positive feedback about it yet. it would be nice if you could. that would help avoid the cost of custom pistons!:rolleyes:

blazin_blazer according to mortec.com the only difference is in the deck height. same bore same stroke, same rods. taller deck height would mean lower compression so you can work the motor harder with less risk for detonation.
 
IIRC.....4 rings on a tall deck too.
 
Maybe someone should take a regular BBC and a TD BBC apart and compare everything for us. With pics of course!
 
i've got a lead on a free 366 around here i'll see if i can pick it up and get some dismantling pics. if only i had a garage!!:rolleyes:
 
I have a TD 427 punched out to a 511 full roller for my mud truck. I had it built so i can't help as good with specs. But i had the machine shop start with a stock TD427 which was bored .125 over (4.375) and we added a 4.25 stroke crank to it. It has 12.82 final compression with some real nice cast heads. It made 685HP and 698TQ on the dyno. I can't wait to get it in my new mud truck for the up coming season.

i have 4-366's all givin to me, well 1 i traded a 4.3L for, but i'm still lookin for that elusive 427 td, i've been told you can't tell it from a 366 until you read the casting # on the crank...is there a way to tell externally? if both use the same block, why can't the 366 be bored&stroked out to 500 cid?
 
You could bore it to 4.00 no problem and then pistons are cheaper to get made. That would give you a 378 cubic inch engine that was 150 pounds heavier than a 383 small block setup.

Difference in fuel economy:dunno: but I do know a 383 will be cheaper to build and have the same power.

I currently have a 66' 396 block I was going to build for my truck that needs a total rebuild, came across a 366 and was wondering if I just rebuilt that can't I bore it out to 4.250 to make it the same thing as a 427 TD? What block is stronger a 366 td 4 bolt main or a 1966 3962 bolt main... don't care about weight so don't even mention it haa Also is there any difference besides bore between a 366TD and 427TD?
 
difference between 366 and 427 is bore sizes. i would think the 4 bolt is stronger, but i don't think that strength is necessary unless you build a high revving motor or high compression. don't know about boring to 4.25, that is a lot of metal to remove. the 366 has a bore of 3.935.
