TBI Engine Replacement

So to be clear, you don't bother with adjusting the fuel pressure regulator, you just put in a higher performing pump, and it basically accomplishes the same thing?

While this may work, the adjustable regulator/gauge mod to the TBI is a lot easier than dropping the tank for a pump.

Also, those spring diaphragm based regulators with no gauge vary a bunch. So even if you bump up pump pressure, not sure i'd be confident in what pressure i was getting.

I did it all from them, salad bowl thing, spacer, fuel pressure regular, gauge. May have made a small difference.

You'll have to slightly bend the fuel lines to fit the gauge adapter. To do this, leave the TBI loose on the manifold, tighten the fuel lines, then use the TBI to bend the fuel lines where they need to go, then mount TBI.

I had my lines slightly misaligned due to the adapter, and trashed them trying to hook them up, and needed new fuel lines.

Call me if you need me to talk you through it.

Good to see you back at it!

Best info for performance TBI stuff. Read it all and spend carefully. You can get quite a lot of difference for WAY less than what you'll spend for all that stuff from CFM Technologies which gets you a solid "maybe."

Thanks for all the info, guys!

Anyone know what size tube fits on the rad petcock valve so I can drain that sucker without a mess?

So what I do is get a drinking water bottle, poke a hole in the side near the bottom shove it on petcock with the cap end pointed down over the back of the steering box to dump into a bucket. I had a picture but can't atm works good thou

All the radiators and petcocks tend to be different. You are lucky if yours even has one with a drain hose connection.

Its a mess every time i do it!

Hey guys! It's been 6 years since I did any wrenching. Finally getting to fix my truck! Hoping I remember which end of the wrench to hammer with.

Anyway, I'll save you the drama story (which some of you may remember). But in short: 6 years ago I replaced my engine with a remanned unit that turned out to be bad from the get-go. Due to the timing in my life, I couldn't deal with pursuing the warranty and replacing the engine. Today my new GM TBI engine was delivered. Can't wait to get it installed and get back on the trail! Hope to get this done with enough time to get some snow wheeling in this winter.

I tore down the TBI unit over the weekend. Need to get into the parts shop to get the rebuild kit and some new injectors.
Welcome back

Hey guys,

Got the intake off, and removed all the accessories except the power steering pump today. It's crazy how much I've forgotten about how all this stuff goes together. It's coming back, but MAN am I rusty!

How much of this can I assemble outside of the truck before I drop it in? Can I put all the accessories and the manifolded on the new engine before I try to put it in there. I have electric fans, so there's a fair amount of space.

How are you lifting the engine out Colby? I put them in and take them out full dressed but I pull the core support to do it easily.

I plan to leave the core support. I will use a mini excavator to lift it.

It mostly depends on how you lift it.
Some lift it from a plate bolted to the manifold.
Some hook chains on two opposing corners and lift, that way you can have everything on as long as your attachment point doesn't cause the chain to crush anything, ask how I know.

When I've done it, I've listed from two diagonal corners.

I assume I can't do it with the dizzy installed?

No reason to do with distributor installed. One more thing to break.

When I did it, it was with just a chain.

Don’t use cheap pry bars to help align. Closest I’ve come to impalement working on cars.

I did it with the dizzy, but not when I used the backhoe.
I had perfect control with a leveler and engine hoist.
When I pulled the diesel from your green k5 to put it in my suburban, using a backhoe, I banged it a couple of times, good thing it doesn't have any plastic pieces. I had the vacuum pump off.
