TBI rich stumble on acceleration

I'm watching this thread. I have the same symptoms, but don't know if it's rich or lean. Shows up cold where I have to ease into the acceleration or die.

FWIW I have a permanently mounted pressure gauge under the hood, but it is only useful for basic checks of the fuel pump since you can't see it while driving. I guess I could put my phone under the hood and take video while driving, then watch later... :haha:

I fiddled with it some more today, but I'm not sure I'm any closer to figuring it out.

The spray pattern looks good, or at least it looks about the same as it did a couple years ago (the last time I checked it with a timing gun).

While I had the air cleaner off, I drove it around the block so I could hear it better. It is definitely backfiring through the intake. :(

I checked the timing at idle. It is right at zero with the connector disconnected and about 12-16 with it connected. It was jumping around, but then it is idling pretty poorly...

Just for grins, I bypassed the fuel pump relay - no change.

I also disconnected the EGR hose - no change.

I never did get around to checking fuel pressure. :doah:

Back firing through intake is not good! Not only does it totally confuse the ECM it may be a bad intake valve... :eek1:

Or you could remove your hood.

I have a long extension for my gauge and route it out hood under windsheild wiper. Does the job to watch fuel pressure at WOT to see it's not dropping. Hard to tune WOT if there's not enough fuel/pressure dropping.

New info: It only backfires and runs poorly when hot. Before it warms up it runs fine.

Other than that, I've been to busy moving to mess with it. However, even running badly it can pull a U-Haul and trailer out of the mud once or thrice. :doah:
