Tesla Cybertruck pickup truck

I don’t doubt there were that many preorders. How many follow through will be a very small percentage. I was pretty tempted myself.

a hybrid setup like locomotives use would be better than a battery powered vehicle that needs recharging too soon..

If they could develop a high output alternator or generator that a small one or two cylinder diesel could power, one that can supply sufficient power to a big enough electric motor to satisfy all possible operating scenarios, then they might have something..

Robert, that's pretty close to what a Chevy Volt does. Small engine driving an electric drivetrain. It has a small battery, too, so your first 50ish miles (used to be 38 like Ken said) don't consume gasoline. Most town-dwellers won't use any gasoline unless they're heading out of town (or forgot to plug it in at night).

For all the people pushing for battery-powered cars, I'm disappointed that GM hasn't done much with the Voltec drivetrain. The concept has potential, as it gets rid of the range anxiety that cripples electric cars. But nobody seems to see it. Even GM is discontinuing it, in favor of battery cars.

Fossil fuels are bad. Unless they are used to mine the stuff needed to make the batteries.

Yeah.
Most likely like Chris here they figured it is refundable, we are part of history making, it's only $100.
But Elon is the smart one, he just got a few millions in an interest free loan for at least 2 years.

They did the same thing with model 3 preorders, though it was $1000 down, IIRC. Having cashflow far ahead of delivery schedule must have been nice.

I don’t know by how much but I’ve a sneaking suspicion it’s a lot, A Lot, but Tesla’s cars are all subsidized with our GD tax $. Pisses me right off. Freagin Commies.

Pretty disrespectful using the great Nikola Tesla’s name too.

All I see is a tax credit that was 7500, but dropped to less than half that. It's based on how many units are sold. If anything it seems to be an incentive to help small manufacturers get started, Article I just found said tesla and gm are the only ones to have sold enough electrics or plug in hybrids (200,000 units) to reduce the tax credit.

Your talking about a rebate right? A rebate is still a subsidy though I guess. But Elon, and his ilk receive much more than that. If the public had to buy electric cars for the amount it cost to build them.....

Where are you getting that info? It's not a rebate, it's a tax credit, and that goes to the buyer. We all still end up footing the bill on stuff like that (same as farm subsidies) but I can find nothing stating tesla is taking federal money.

Also, that federal tax credit is phasing out. Soon both Tesla and GM will be on their own as far as sale tax credits go.

Some states offer registration subsidies for electric cars (mine actually punishes them with higher rates) and charging stations, and some did or still do subsidize their purchase price. But in my state I do not think EVs get any special treatment aside from the extra $75 annual fee.

In this case, they did pay the loan back (even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while...) but a bunch of other similar loans the gov made failed.

I know a guy who bought a Tesla 4 years ago. He openly laughed that he only paid $70k for a $130k car and that he got free electricity if he recharged at certain charging stations that were subsidized by the govt.
