tested an urban myth today...

i was more refering to the runflats than anything elce in this thread...im sure some magnesium alloy has more magneiusm has more magnesium it it and some has less...i would say the run flats would have less..there are a few people on here that have said they couldnt get them to ignite

You used the word plausible in your conclusion. The word is confirmed.

There are posts in this thread and I think you've read ReadyMix's post where he burned shavings from his runflats.

Now if you want to do a test with a plasma cutter on a runflat then that would be doing something new but this current thread is asking, and possibly persisting, questions that have already been answered and should be laid to rest. That's my point.

all he got was the shavings to ignite not the runflat just like myself i put a torch on it and it wouldnt ignite...is that new enough for ya...here straight from the horses mouth

I cut mine with a Dewalt Sawzall using a 7" Lennox Bi-Metal blade.
It cut through the runflat like butter.

I really don't know why everyone is so worried about them catching fire. They are a Mag-Al alloy, and will take much more heat than a spark to set them ablaze.
After I cut mine, I used a grinder with a 80G flap disk to smooth them out.

After I was done I did some playing with the scrap and even a propane torch would not set a large piece on fire. If it was a pile of shavings it would though.
MAPP gas would do it all though.

I cut mine down w/ a plasma cutter, no biggee. I am not saying they will not burn, I am just saying my 5 did not.

The easy way to light magnesium is with a road flare. Also a lot more portable than an Oxy Acetylene setup. And I can say from experience that road flare+ VW block = good time. Though strangely cops seem to disagree...

Trust me: magnesium will burn. I've seen people throw VW cases into a raging bonfire and the light the **** gave off made night like it was daytime.

Sweet trick we did that at a buddys one 4th of july
