Welp, it drained with some gear glitter, but not as much as I worried.

The gears in my axles looked worse than that when I first pulled the cover and they ran for a few years with no issues. And yes the rust is from condensation.
 
I went ahead and drained/refilled the NP208 and SM465 while I was at it. I hadn't ever done them before, so I wasn't surprised when both the ATF and gear oil came out shimmery and with plenty of metal bits. Refilling the trans through the shifter hole was easy and kind of fun.
No photos, but I inspected the spot welds on the shifter and found them intact. The roll pin hole was worn, as I suspected. I think I will drill it out and put in a bigger pin to firm up the shifter feel.

The RTV said to wait 24 hours before filling the rear end, so I will follow the instructions dutifully and drive my wife's car to work tomorrow.
 
If all the trips were short low speed, you might get lucky. Heat is the factor here,those heavy loads to transfer station would have cause some heat. Hopefully there was oil in it then

Those trips were 20 miles round trip, mostly highway speed.
 
I might/will probably be driving the Jimmy daily for a while.
How badly did I damage things by driving with an empty differential?

Well so far, so good. After beating this old horse up and down the mean streets of Portland as my daily commuter for the last 1,000+ miles, it's held up great.
I got the Police Patrol Vehicle back in service tonight, so it's time to give the old boy a much needed break.

Since a week before I took it to CnC, I'd noticed a slight coolant leak appearing on the ground intermittently. Topped it off, got a little better, but then it got worse. I put a new lower rad hose on it, but the leak was still leaking. Turns out the old water pump failed, so I replaced it. While I was rooting around under the hood, I figured I might as well replace the leaking power steering lines.

I'd routed the belts the same way they'd been for the 5 years I've owned it, but accidentally routed the power steering hose too close to the belt. It lasted a partial commute until it was completed emptied onto the streets of Portland.

I wrassled it home and had to go buy another new hose 2 days in a row. Neat. At least they're only $20.

So I put the new new PS hose on, argued with the O'Reilly and AutoZone fellers about PS belt length and width and how their computer was wrong, went home and ended up installing (one of) the correct belts their computers said would fit my rig. Apparently the previous owner had a much longer and slightly wider belt, so he routed it in a weird, non-stock way.
Anyway, sometimes even the parts counter guys can be right. Just don't tell them I said that.
