Mechanic just called. Said it was the distributor. Long story short, the internals of the distributor were falling apart. Said it’s running better now than it had in a long time.

He had confirmed fuel was getting from the fuel pump to the injectors, but something was blocking the signal that tells the injectors to spray fuel into the throttlebody. He opened up the distributor, and there was a wire which apparently had been loose and finally broke free. New distributor and she’s purring like a kitten.

I thought you already replaced the disty.
Glad it’s running properly now!

No, but believe it or not that was going to be the next part I was going to replace. But at least this way the mech was able to do a lot of triage and rule out other stuff. Instead of me guessing and never knowing.

I had a distributor fail in my old K5 and it was the last thing we checked too. At that point we were like what else could it be.

A friend of mine who lives just a few minutes away was even thinking it was the distributor but I just didn’t have time to play guess work anymore.

I guess one project truck isn’t enough for me. I need two. But I didn’t exactly choose the timing of this project.

The 2wd 700r4 gave up the ghost in the BluJay. A 4x4 burb is always more useful to me than a 2wd burb, and I do not want to pay for a transmission twice, so I had a 4x4 700r4 built for me by my transmission guy. Build specs below. Snagged a NP208 in good shape and have an S style crossmember on the way.

Plan is to swap in the transmission and tcase and get a rear driveshaft and ride like that for a while with the 2wd front suspension while I get this 10bolt I picked up freshened up and ready for install. I’ll also need a 14 bolt for the rear eventually.

I have no interest in turning this into a super custom offroad machine. That’s what the RedBurb is for. I simply view 4wd as a tool that is more useful to have than be without. So that’s why I’m not getting into a bunch of custom axles and crossmembers and stuff. Just a simple factory-ish swap to get the job done. 4” springs and 35s.

But while I’m doing the transmission swap I am going to go ahead and update the exhaust to dual with headers and an H or X pipe.

What’s kind of a bummer is that at different points in time, I had everything I needed to do a full 4x4 swap on this truck included axles, tcase, trans, bracketry, and springs… but sold all those things off. But that’s life.

That's what I did in my van years ago, drove it in 2wd for a couple of years while I collected all the parts, I did use the low gear option quite a bit too.

Transmission is in. Not fully installed yet but it is at least in there. No pictures yet bc there’s not much to show. Putting new seals into the 208 and hopefully will have the crossmember by the end of the week.

Now you need wheels and tires.
Nevermind, it was 2wd so 5 lug, you had to change anyway

Yep. I had always intended to go 8 lug, and was going to swap the 6 lug 10 bolt I had to 8, but when I found this fella selling a 4.10 8 lug 10 bolt for a fair price and he happened to have a newer style 14 bolt with discs and matching 4.10 for an even fairer price, I had to jump on it.

They’re home and nestled in my tiny crowded “shop”, ready to ride out the impending storm.

Rain or shine, the transmission is in and fully supported. Only had to drill one additional hole on each side of the frame .

Split the 208 open a few days ago to inspect its gizzards and all looked well. Put it back together. Next step is to swap the input and output seals then give the case a good cleaning then it’s ready to go.

IMG_9909.jpeg

Pulled the brake pads off the 8 lug 10bolt and happy to report both sides spin freely. Can’t figure out how to get the pads out of the newer style 14 bolt but those calipers are not seized so I can still spin the hubs. I’ll update the brakes later.

Next step is going to be to get the tcase installed, then get new spring perches on the 14 bolt and get it installed. Then I can measure for a rear driveshaft and have it built. Then I can order all the ORD goodies to swap the front end to the 10bolt.

I snagged a set of old ferd steelies during lunch today. I was hesitant about putting ferd parts on a Chevy, but the wheels are everything I need them to be. Just need some ferd-specific 9/16-18 lug nuts.

The wheels are 16” and what looks to be a 7.5-8” wheel with about 4.5” backspacing. Hub bore and stud holes are appropriate sizes for the axles I bought Saturday. 8x6.5 bolt pattern.

These will get a set of 285/75R16 Maxxis Razr ATs for now. I’d prefer 35s but the wife wants the spare to still be able to be carried inside without losing the 3rd row seat. Happy wife happy life. Might go with a 31” spare in an effort to keep it mounted to the side, or be happy with a 33 laying flat on the floor behind the 3rd row.

Once the 285s are mounted I’ll spray paint them white. That’ll give it a sick old school look with some black lug nuts.

Down the road, I’ll get a set of Method Beadgrips like what’s on the RedBurb (but in clear coat) and 35s along w some fancy ORD custom springs, but for now I am just trying to keep costs down.

My driveshaft guy came by today to inspect my axles and gave them a clean bill of health. The front 10 bolt just needs a new set of locking hubs and brakes, and the 14 bolt just needs brakes and new perches/shock mounts. Those arrived from Barnes4x4 yesterday, along w a new deep dish pan for the 700 and new ptfe hose and fittings for the oil cooler lines.

We went ahead and sealed up the pumpkins.

Got plenty to keep me busy for a while.
