The Brandy Build

A build taking a faded, rusty, 1988 k5 and transforming it into a more or less restored, 1974 full convertible.
Clutch and brake pedal assembly painted and back together.

I’m going to be starting on the transmission swap this weekend.

Transmission and transfer case out yesterday. E7532018-1EAE-4E9F-A7FC-7C4302D35146.jpegToday I worked on getting the trans cooler and lines, tv cable, shifter linkage, steering column, and brake pedal out. Cutting the shifter hole out now. After that all the new stuff can go in.

A few things led me to this:

let’s go back a week. While trying to put the new transmission in i kept running into issues with the bell housing and top of the transmission hitting the body. After calling it quits for the night I started thinking about how much easier it would be if I had a lift and that way I could clean up the frame while I was at it. Well my neighbor has a lift but he’s out of town. I kept thinking about it and became obsessed with the idea. I could have just jacked the body up, put the transmission in and lowered the body back down or I could have probably jacked the front of the motor up to tip it back enough but I decided to just go all in and do this. So for a little bit I’ll be wire wheeling the frame, replacing brake lines, freshening up the suspension, replacing the fuel sending unit and cleaning up the fuel tank, replacing body mount bushings, and probably a couple other things here and there. It is a small delay in time but I’m ok with it. It’s something I wanted to do but didn’t plan on doing. I’m glad I get the chance to do it. As for the body. I wasn’t going to crawl under it since it’s made of wood but it’s honestly rock solid like I can’t get it to rock or sway at all. So I might reinforce it more and clean up the underside as well. More to come.

Bit of a photo dump.

I guess it’s no wonder my fuel gauge didn’t work, the float is laying in the bottom along with the filter boot from 2 sending units ago apparently because the one I pulled out still has it. I ordered new shocks front and rear, I ordered a new sending unit. I have new body mount bushings. I’ll clean up the fuel tank and paint it I’ll be removing the springs, taking the packs apart, cleaning them, painting them, and putting them back together. They’ll get new bolts and maybe bushings depending on the shape they’re in. I’ll be cleaning up and painting the axles, I need to replace the pinion seal in the rear. I’ll also replace all brake lines and at least one fuel line that leaks. And of corse the frame is getting wire wheeled and painted with por-15. In fact most parts I’m painting will be painted in por-15. I’m guessing this is what I’ll be doing over the next 2 weeks. I was hoping to be working on sheet metal at this point but I think most would agree this is a worthwhile delay.

Jokes aside about masks, please wear one or ventilate the garage. You don't want any of that stuff you whiz wheel off the frame in your lungs

Cover everything that is open, like the intake, brake booster, bearings...

@Bent77 Yeah I wear a respirator when painting, wire wheeling, cutting, sweeping, pretty much anything that creates dust or has fumes. And I’ll be covering the motor in plastic.

Not really what I was hoping for:

The second springs in both packs were broken, kinda weird. Anyone else experience this?

@Bent77 like $100 bucks cheap or cheaper? There’s a guy near me I can probably get the correct leafs or even a full pack for pretty cheap but they’re used so I’m debating on whether or not to go ahead and replace them or go the cheap route, for a low enough price I’ll just get new.

I’ve seen them for $100-$150 a spring shipped. Most have new bushings. Your used set may need bushings. There’s always Craigslist, so you have options if you’re not in a hurry

Yeah that’s the price I was seeing too, definitely affordable but more than I want to spend since I was planing just to refurbish the old ones. the guy near me has what I need which works out better since I already ordered new leaf spring bushings.

What's you plan for removing the old ones?
