The Brandy Build

A build taking a faded, rusty, 1988 k5 and transforming it into a more or less restored, 1974 full convertible.
One day it’s a tranny swap, next day it’s a frame off resto. I love it. Looking great man.

Progress has been slow, mostly wire wheeling and painting. We’re building an addition on to the side of our barn to get all the junk out of the shop and maybe put a lift in so I’ve spent a good bit of time on that. But the springs are painted with new bushings and are ready to go back in. I bought new shocks and painted them to match since the front were white and the rear were matte black. I also got new gas tank straps and painted them. I have all new hardware for the suspension. Today I’ll finish up the wiring wheeling on the frame, gas tank, axle and hitch. And hopefully paint those things tomorrow or the next day. Here are a couple pictures:

Quick update: a nice guy let me borrow his engine hoist so I’ll be able to wire wheel inside the frame where the motor sits which is great. I ordered new motor mounts.

Also i wire wheeled a hole in the gas tank.

There was some scaley rust and the remaining metal was too weak. So although it would have been a weak spot I still wish I hadn’t done that. Whatever. A new tank is on the way. i did pick up a skid plate for 20 bucks so that’s good. I’m going paint the frame in halves (front half and back half) so I’m going to wire wheel the frame and rear axle like a maniac tonight and hopefully get the back half painted tomorrow so I can get the motor out and start on the front half ASAP. This is already taking longer than I wanted it to but when it’s down to the frame like this it’s so hard to resist the “might as well” feeling. More to come soon.

After you paint the frame and it’s cured hit it with RP-342 military grade cosmoline. It will never rust or collect moisture. It will always look sleek like the day it was painted.

I’ll look into that thanks

i can vouch for that cosmoline stuff, my summer job in college was trying to get that stuff off bmw engines that had been brought over on ships (this was back in the 90's). it also gets in and stays in every nook and cranny

Bit of a delay, I had to lay the old Ryobi angle grinder to rest, thing was a legend and shall be missed. Anyway I painted the rear half of the frame and I’m so pleased with how it looks.

High gloss por15 is what I used. I also painted the axle and the gas tank skid plate I picked up. I’m going to put on more coats but since everywhere is locked down it’s not as easy to get more paint and brushes so I’ll order the paint and use the rest of what I have for now. It’s hard to save the brushes though, best bet is to seal them up tight in thick plastic and hope they’re soft enough to use. I’m excited to get the suspension back under it and move on to the front. I’ll probably also order some cosmoline at this point, does anyone know how far one can will go?

Suspension and gas tank back under it, I can move on to the front now. I’m really happy with how it turned out.

Couple extra pictures from tonight, the new gas tank after it was painted; and the skid plate installed.

The skid plate was so tight against the tank I was worried tightening the bolts for it would pull it too hard against the tank and dent it. I have a 31 gallon tank but I’ve heard people taking about a small gap still between the tank and plate. Maybe mines bent a little i don’t know. Anyway I’m sure it will be fine. I’ll be sure to clean it out and if it traps too much dirt and water and rusts out the new tank I’ll just ditch the skid. It’s not like I’m going to off road this thing to the point where I’ll need it but it’s nice to have more protection for the tank. Tomorrow I should be able to get the motor out which means I can get started on wire wheeling the front half of the frame. I’m anxious to get the frame finished.

I think I’ll cut the rusty metal out of the body while the frame is out. I’d love to be able weld in new metal while The body is off but my welder won’t reach that far. Still trying to figure out how I could do that. That way I could get the whole underside painted while it’s off which would make things way easier. We’ll see what happens.

Extension cord?:dunno:

Yeah I was pricing out 6 gauge 3 wire cable last night. It’s doable. It’s pretty far from the shop to the body though. At least 30ft. I figure the loss won’t affect it too much though seeing as it’s just sheet metal.

6 gauge is perfect for really long cables but 30 feet even 10 gauge would be fine.
How big is your welder?
I did get a 6 gauge for my 100' extension cord for my welder and plasma cutter.
Cost me $300 just for the cable

I’m not sure about the welder size. I can’t even remember the brand. It’s a little flux core mig. It never gets used. Most of the stuff we need welded is too thick for it but it will do fine for sheet metal. A welder buddy of mine is going to help me get it dialed in. Maybe I’ll go with a smaller gauge then. The cheaper the better and yeah 6 gauge is defiantly expensive, from the prices I was seeing, 100 feet for $300 seems pretty good.
