The DSPRO budget Blazer build

I like this build. I dont know how or what this "budget" thing is your are doing and sticking to. It just never works for me...

I was able to back it out of the shop and into the street under it's own power! It's loud, but aside from the exhaust leak the engine sounds ok. Found and hooked up the hidden return line to the tank in the frame rail, and capped one of the injectors that was freely spewing diesel onto the ground.

Next up is checking tranny fluid levels, and filling/bleeding the power steering.

$804- $77 (plugs), $40 (fuel pump), $10 PS fluid/misc:

$677 remaining.

Bled the power steering, works great now.

A couple injector return hoses keep popping off when I start the engine. I will replace them and make sure they are all clamped.

One of the hard lines into the IP is leaking. It might be the one I loosened when the engine was out. Perhaps I forgot to tighten it!

Gotta fix the exhaust leak, and that's about it! (At least, that's all I've discovered so far)

Budget update for you:

I have received a flywheel, and your truck budget should have received $40. Lemme know if it did/didn't arrive.

Thanks again! :thumb:

You're welcome! Glad it showed up ok! I spent that $40 at NApa on new injector return lines ($20) and a Harbor freight deep socket set to get the inkector out. ($20)

:D

After another test drive I've found one of the coolant lines leaks, and I'm getting quite a lot of white smoke out of the drivers side tailpipe, but not the passenger side...

I've havent driven it enough to see if it'll clear up, but any thoughts are welcome!

Well, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised taking a chance on an old engine. That repair will have to wait a few months until after the holidays... Lame!

Yeah. I had a similar thought when I decided to buy a used flywheel for my truck. The new ones aren't much more expensive, and eliminate the risk.

Keep an eye on the appearance of your oil, just in case...

I have a project to do in my shop, so the Blazer will be on hold until middle February or so. I'm planning to do the head gasket.

In the mean time, I'll be mounting up the rest of my beadlocks/tires, and putting them on the Orange truck until the time comes to pull it's axles. (And put the 1/2 ton axles under it) That'll probably happen in the spring.

Off topic, I've just bought a 1987 300TD Turbo Diesel Wagon to replace our dying 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

It get's 3x the MPG. Lol.

A failed nozzle can cause the white smoke also. What does the smoke smell like? Sweet, rich, or no smell really?

Nice wagon. Though there are many oddities to them, I like the cars in that series. :thumb:

But I call bluff on the MPG. I've been around several of those 300D/300SD turbo diesel MB sedans, and they seemed to average between 24MPG and 28MPG. 1/3 * 28 = 9.3MPG = really crummy mileage for a 6.2 diesel.

My 6.2 longbed K10 gets between 23 and 24 on the highway (20-21MPG in town). I have gotten both higher and lower depending on the driving conditions. 3 * 20 = 60MPG = better mileage than pretty much anything from that era.

The average 6.2 number is probably a little bit lower than what I get, but I wouldn't expect more than 28 for that style of car. For an apples-to-apples comparison, the EPA expects 21/25MPG from a 300TD. The EPA estimate for the same year K10 with a 6.2 is 18/22MPG.

But you definitely got yerself some pretty neat wheels. Will it get its own build thread?

Oh, I meant that the Benz gets 3X the mileage of our Jeep V8, not the 6.2! Sorry for the mix up! Benz get's 30 on the freeway, Jeep probably get about 9 right now. She's hurting! ;)

That one I can believe. Again, nice trade. :D

Hope it doesn't distract you from the project for too long...
