Resident Problem Child
*This thread/build is for the Contractors/D.D. Street Mod Nuts*
I've been a freebie member for a few years and figured it's about time to confess my Suburban obsession sins. My wife calls it MidLife Crisis,I call it years of self denial keeping me from going total gearhead mostly due to lack of funds and/or raising 3 kids on a construction workers budget.
If you aren't bored silly by now here's my details:
I bought an 85 K10 Suburban in 06. It came to me 99% stock with a 6.2 diesel/700r4/3.42s and the "Soccer Mom" 16" rims. The 3/4 clutch was shot of course which continued my 700r4 curse following me thru 3 other GMs. It's my Daily Driver so I have to go Rolling Reno style for now.
I'm now on my 3rd 700r4,got smart of found an actual 'K' case and became a customer at Deltrans in Newark,DE. I'm also on my 3rd 350,lucked out bigtime and found a 73 Blazer 4 bolt 350 010/020 castings.
I've stayed mostly stock hard parts but have an Accel HEI and a Holley 600(it was in stock walking distance from my house) I plan on slapping a 135 Amp CS130 on in the next few weeks along with a new P/S pump and water pump just to feel a little more secure.
The insanity starts with body mods. When I had no work I got bored enough to wire wheel the whole truck down to metal and and brought it back up with about 1/8th inch of Rustoleum and Heculinered the splash pans. I built a 'custom' roof rack/platform from industrial materials and heat glazed freezer racks from a nearby store reno. I plan on maximizing the cargo space and reinforcing/lightening the beast for ultimate tool capacity.
I don't have many pics of the pre-altered beast but promise I'll dig them up and take many more as I go a little nuts on my OCD victim
Plans/Possibilities:
I want to utilize every inch of my cargo area and since I don't possess any TARDIS technology(bigger on the inside than outside) I'm giving thought to adding an 'outer bulkhead' behind the rear doors. To keep it looking as close to original as possible I'm looking at rear bed corners that go from bottom of body up to the body line and wrap around to include the tail lights. Upper wheel arches will take care of just behind the doors up to the body line and back to the corners. My idea is to 'suspend' them about an inch or so from the existing body, put some solid sheet 'foamular' insulation in the dead space for a little Nascar type safety, and tie in the rest down low with workable sheet metal. I'm deleting the 4 square miles of glass in the cargo and the barn door windows and covering with sheet metal. I'll tie in to the bump-out above the body line with either more sheet metal or *insanity alert* some 3/8" Azek or other PVC sheet material and possibly keep it light. This enables me to attach LOTS of stuff to the inner bulkhead...battery chargers, cord hangers, etc.
Since I hate that axle width difference I'm thinking about having my 15"x8" Chevy steelies widened to 10" deep dish and if the backspacing doesn't make me happy maybe get some good bolt-in wheel spacers. IF I do this I may see how the wheel wells like the change and since one already took the dive and the other isn't healthy I might rebuild them to leave more room in between. I believe this would work well with my 'azz end on steroids' plans.
For my increased hauling plans I'm thinking a shackle flip from ORD and some add-a-leaf research is in store for me. Maybe even a double rear shock setup.
Just because I can't leave ANYthing alone I'm daydreaming about 'raising the roof'
I'm wondering if I could cut a section of roof between the dips and the raised ridges a little before the edge over the barn doors up to/or just behind the curved angles. My rack is bolted thru the roof into the support ribs already,I could keep the bump-up bordered just beyond the rack and reinforce/modify the 'joists' for more strength. This would leave me room for recessed speakers, lights and let me run conduit for future plans.
Being a Music and amatuer computer/electronic tinkerer I'd like to build my own computer with vibration resistant Solid State drives in my rig and a surround system straight from a living room rather than all the craziness of auto sounds systems. This will require a good inverter(or 2) and a seperate battery bank to power my eardrum damage fetish. The PC is because in 22 years of self employment I have NEVER been able to keep my "office" under office conditions.....kids,grrrrrr.....As a monitor I'm thinking of cheating with the smallest flat screen TV I can find with compatible resolution and hookups. I'll also cheat the Backup Cam industry and snag a color/night vision security cam...I'll need it for reverse and blind spots when I lose all that glass

I caught it just starting to death wobble. Running I95 with that loose hub would have put the death in death wobble for sure!
And I still have to grind holes in the hangers that LMC sent...supposed to be 2wd front/rear but they sent 4wd rear/rear
It's what I get for trying to cheat
