On a 33? Why would a 4.8/5.3 not work for that?

1800RPM is a great cruising speed for the old engine.

As it is, I usually cruise between 1300-1900RPM in the K5 (according to my tach). Not so great for an LS, unless I'm missing something. :dunno:

I'll admit I've driven few LS rigs, so this is mostly theory on my end.
 
Anybody know where to find accurate torque curves for stock 4.8/5.3/6.0/8.1 engines? I find lots of dyno sheets for individual modified engines.
 
@blazinzuk - As you can tell, I haven't figured out what direction I want to go yet. I still want to play with a turbodiesel, but not if it's going to turn into a broken crankshaft down the road.
 
110hp is about 80 more then a deslow puts out at max! You would be fine
 
You actually only need like 40hp to run down the road at speed.
I think it would be fine myself. Your not going to be pulling a trailer. I think the ls really is the best way for you to go, even though you don't want to. I would say if you want to mess around with TD, keep the Stepside for your toy, build the burb to use.
And for gearing I would wait to swap it and get it on the road and use it. Then decide if you need it.
In a past life I ran a tbi350/700r4 with 285s. It was underpowered passing or a big uphill. But that was no LS engine either.

According to this chart, I'd have ~110HP at 2000RPM. Definitely not a good use of an LS swap.

I'd need to be in second gear on the highway to get to peak power. Even I don't want that much overdrive. :doah:

Here's what I'm starting with (LH6). I don't have a tach, but I don't think I ever run the K10 past 2500RPM (115HP)

Here's what the J-code produces. The K5 does have a tach, and I'll take it as high as 2800RPM on a late shift (thank you, NV4500 gear splits :crazy:). Still only 140HP.

6.5 numbers look different depending on which turbine is used, but in all respects there is more power.




I'm not power hungry, the K5 is fast enough with its worn-out 140HP. But I do think the turbine will be fun until it blows the bottom out of the cracked block.
 
I failed to mention that tbi350 truck was 3.73 geared. It was fine Driving around.
 
Ethan there is no arguing HP or torque against an LS motor. You simply can't.

My jimmy gets 17 mpg on the highway. That's 37s 4.56s and 700r4.

I know guys with very similar trucks with LS motors getting 15 or 16.

In no situation other than an EMP blast or a zombie apocalypse does a 6.2 make more sense than an LS motor. It makes more power everywhere.

Beyond that they are very reliable.

I understand the quirky attractiveness of the rattletrap 6.2s, the 5.3 is a truly modern engine.

That's my 2cents. If you are even considering an LS just do it. You will be happy with the power, reliability, and the cold starting.

I don't think the 6.2s/6.5s are junk like many but in a daily driver/wheeler/expo rig an LS makes way more sense
