The Green Grendel

Flat plate on a jack. A ratchet strap from the jack to the front axle and a ratchet strap to the rear axle. Another ratchet strap holding the trans on.

I did a turbo 400 in a driveway like that.

Jack sunk down 2" as soon as you put weight on it

Hadn't thought of using ratchet straps to position it fore & aft. I have a HF tranny jack with a flat platform, and I do plan to ratchet strap the tranny to the jack.

Aside from Wifey I don't have anyone to help me carry the iron pig over to the truck, so this next phase is going to be interesting.

Nicely done. Big step closer to driving it.

Stabbing a trans is easy compared to what you've been doing, and I endorse the 'many ratchet straps make safe work' method.

Easier than swapping a starter? I've done a few smaller tranny jobs before, and I'm skeptical. But I'll give it a shot.

I doubt you have mosquitos.. Glad you have both going now, been far to long. Keep that go getter additude and I'll bring you out west for some prospectin. Or.. Whatever..

Thanks. Mosquitos have been happily in decline for the last several weeks. I don't recall having any issues yesterday. But they really don't like it when the smoke cloud starts up. :wink1:

Remove the tranny hump and use an engine hoist. That's how I've done mine a few times. Easiest way to do it.

Yeah, that does look like the way to do it. I have no hoist, and I'm not too enthusiastic about trying to use one in the sandbox. Wheels sink in unpredictable ways. But I'm not overly impressed with my success so far, so I may wind up buying one anyway.

Today I installed the clutch and pressure plate.

Next up should be the tranny, so I got that dragged over to the truck.

As with the TH400, the truck is several inches too low to clear the bell housing.

So I got out the jack and raised that frame rail up to create clearance. I managed to screw it up, though. Half-way through the maneuvering dance, I managed to cause the truck to fall off the jack. :doah: :doah:

While I'm thankful for safety practices that kept me far from harm, the frame rail landed on the bell housing and caused this crack. :(

So...now what? I don't have the right tools to weld up the crack. My first instinct is that ignoring the crack is a bad idea (though I'm not 100% confident of that). I don't have another hydro bell housing to use. I thought about bolting a patch across the crack, but the geometric constraints of the housing and the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate make that solution a pain.

Ideas?

Ratchet straps also work with a hoist.

Not to move the hoist but the trans

After pushing this thing around for a bit, I'm still dreading the hoisting process. It's not on the jack, so I hafta get it up onto the jack. And it just seems so heavy. It's not at all like the TH400, it is a heavy beast. I find myself wishing for a real floor. And a hoist. And a bunch of other things. :haha:

Also started it up again today. It was much crankier today, cranked for a bit before it popped off. And from back here I can hear the exhaust leak.

Video-posting practice. :)

Get it welded. Simple as that. It will crack all the way if you don't

That's what I was afraid of. I wish I knew someone with a TIG welder right about now. I'm comfortable doing the welding, I just don't have the right tools. For any of this stuff. I'm trying to do this with no lift and no hoist and no floor and no welder. Basic hand tools only. :doah:

I guess the build is back to being on hold for a while. :dunno:

Damn that sucks, I almost added to my earlier post to remove the bell housing and bolt it on separately. Now I really feel bad that I didn't. Sorry buddy

Not in any way your fault. I slipped up (literally), and I broke things. That's life. If I hadn't bumped the jack it wouldn't have broken. 100% my fault.

The reason that I have it all integrated together is that reverse-drilling the bell housing bolts requires me to install it that way (bolt heads are inside bell housing). I'd love to bolt up the BH, set up the clutch and bleed out the hydraulics before installing the gearbox. Would make life a bunch easier to do that before the space gets filled with gearbox. But that's one thing that I lost by using the SM465 bell housing with the NV4500.

You're running a custom AA bell housing, right? With mechanical clutch? I wish I had taken the time to look at that last week.

That sucks man!!!! Want a bell housing??? I'll send it to you if you cover shipping! Let me see if I have one for sure first. Is it hydraulic or manual?

This is a hydraulic bell housing from a 1986-91 square body with an SM465 (casting #15530202).

I would be most happy to hot-swap a good one on if you have one that is compatible. And to think I just turned down a free one a few weeks ago. :doah:

Ok I'll look first thing tomorrow morning!
