The Green Grendel

Yeah. You know, really corny and almost predictable.

Ah. I grew up in the corn belt, that's probably where it comes from.

I will say this...if you can predict what I'm going to say, you have some neat superpowers that I want to borrow. Even I never know what corny thought is going to pop into my head in a particular situation.

@GWeakland620, But I can't use said hoist until I unbreak that bell housing. :doah:

@Metrodps had offered me his extra one a couple months ago. But I can't get ahold of him anymore. Not sure if he's being isolated or if I managed to tick him off again. :dunno:

In lieu of that, I will be looking around for a local fab shop to weld it up for me.

This is yet another situation where having mechanical friends up here would pay large dividends. :doah:

Hired a local shop to weld it up. They opted for using MIG instead of TIG. Not particularly pretty welds, but better than I could have done with my present equipment. Sigh. Next time, I'll try not to drop a truck on the poor thing. :doah:

Outside.

Inside.

The web is lined up pretty well, though. That should mean the bolt holes still line up. But I feel like double checking them against the block before I mount it up to the NV4500.

Hoist should be here soon. Not sure when I'll get it mounted up. But we are moving forward slowly.

Forward is forward. Sure, it may be so slow that @AgDieseler gets a chuckle out of it, but at least your moving.

That's ok, we get lots of laughs over his progress rate, so it's all good.

The difference is that when he's done, he'll have a top-notch better-than-factory-quality engine bay, and I'll just have a bunch of random, mismatched, unpainted parts held together with baling wire. And the sad part is that he'll probably be done before I am. :doah: :haha:

Priorities, man. This thing has never been a priority, and that's why it's taking forever.

Been driving it all week.

David

Oh. Umm...congrats. I think. :haha: Last I heard it was in the test-driving phase.

I guess I did a crummy job wording that sentence, but I meant a side-by-side comparison of how many months it took each of us to get the trucks pieced back together. You had a large head start, as I'm only a few updates into this thread (even if time keeps passing between shop days). But I'm a looooong ways from having a driving rig. Tranny, u-joints, setting up the rear end, swapping the front axle, getting some tires. And then I get to start fixing all the little broken things that I haven't thought about yet (like why the blower motor never comes on).

It's a long ways away from being a useful vehicle.

Yesterday I test-fitted the welded bell housing on the block. It doesn't fit perfectly anymore after being squashed. I opened up 3 of the holes slightly, and now the fit is snug (but I can live with that). I'm quite glad I did a test-fit before reinstalling it on the NV4500.

I have my el-cheapo engine hoist assembled and positioned over the floor opening. Tranny is on the crane, lined up with the block. Tranny jack is below it for safety and stability (and it also controls tilt, which is handy). I have slid the tranny forward far enough to engage the clutch splines, but it's still 3/4" short of being fully mated (pilot bearing, no?). I stopped for the day, planning to head to the hardware store and buy a couple extra-long bell housing bolts to keep it lined up while I work it forward. I'm getting frustrated with trying to slide it forward and also keep it oriented correctly. I just don't have enough hands, even with Wifey helping.

But it's a small step forward. :)

Oh - I'm working with the assumption that simply cranking down the bell housing bolts is a bad idea. If this is not a bad idea, it would make life a lot easier...

Yes, Do not crank it in with the bell housing bolts! Literally just try to wiggle the crap out of it while pushing it in. Up down left right. Also helps if you put it in gear and try to turn the output shaft back and forth while pushing and wiggling.

I always found it'll fight and fight then when it goes it slides right together and makes you think somethings not right.

As stated though DO NOT pull it together with bolts (auto or stick). Put it in gear and spin it, you get quite good at doing it alone after awhile.
