The Green Grendel

Well I hope so! You having a kid! Hopefully a boy, right?

When I say old news, I meant that you probably already mentioned it in another thread.

I don't visit every single thread on the site.

I was thinking the same thing. I figured it was posted already and I missed it. Congratulations Ethan!

I think you will get used to the truck (steering) as far as the lockers that could be a little more interesting on slippery roads.

Yeah, I'd much rather put the Detroit in the summertime camping/overlanding vehicle and put a govlock in this one. But I wasn't able to find one fast enough to beat the cold weather. So I buttoned it up as is. I will prolly change it out whenever the Sub gets back on the road.

I got caught today, tearing up the pasture when I got home. If I had realized Wifey was filming I would have done more than one pass close to the house. But here's what I have.

I think I might try it again tomorrow, to try to get a decent picture of the snow flying.

P.S. - The front axle definitely works. :thumb:

Congrats on the upcoming kiddo! Glad to see the K5 tearing it up too. Looks good!

I'm pretty sure the wife heard you coming. Stealth is not something a 6.2 oil burner is not known for.

Thanks, I agree with you. But I think I'll try again to get some non-blurry pictures. And also because it's a heap of fun tearing through the pasture like that. :thumb:

Yes, this is definitely true. This one also has leaky exhaust, so it is louder than most of the rigs on the road. The exhaust doesn't look terrible, but it sure does sound like a straight-pipe when I get into the skinny pedal. So maybe the exhaust is worse off than I thought. :dunno:

It appears you have the cold weather grille insert...is that effective? I tried one on a modern Explorer for one season and it didn't seem to do anything....

I do have the insert. I don't know how effective it is. This truck doesn't even have a temperature gauge (just a panic light), so I don't have a good way of evaluating its effectiveness. I do know that the heater starts blowing warm air pretty quickly, and that is not true of my other 6.2 rigs.

Started it at 12* yesterday and 9* today (twice each). It takes 15-20 seconds of GP before it will start, but once it gets there it fires off promptly. I didn't recheck the plugs after the relay incident, but I do know that I broke the tab off of one of them. And one of them is a recycled 13G plug (not intended for 15-second glow times). So we're down at least one plug, and likely more. But it still started, even in single digits. Wifey asked if I'm gonna start using the block heater, but I wanna see how far I can go with this. It cranks over quite quickly, so I think it's just a matter of waiting for enough BTUs to pour into the combustion chambers. Big Blue cranks much more slowly, and I do not think it would start by itself at this temperature. It has in the past, but it's more tired now.

Also, I have >60 miles on it so far. No issues whatsoever, aside from the burned-out HVAC blower switch being flaky. Is that something that LMC sells?

Whenever I can talk myself into crawling underneath it in 8" of snow at -2 degrees I will go retorque the suspension bolts. Maybe next week when it's supposed to get back up to 20 degrees again.

So what's your recommendation on a quick start glow plug? Since they are computer controlled, or whatever.
