The Green Machine - parked

ORD gets their springs from Alcan iirc. Or was it Deaver?

Here's what they told me:

So, here's deal: Just as mentioned above, Alcan builds our springs to our specs, they don't have anything to do with the design process. If it didn't make sense to have them ship the springs directly from their shop nobody would know they we involved. I don't mind that people know since they have a quality name and do good work but that's the situation.
Comparing the two? We run softer spring rates and more thinner material for more available travel and softer ride. And we do have a lot of vehicle specific info and experience to work with. In addition to a set of our springs on a buddy's truck that you've ridden in and like that we can use to help set yours up which is a great tool. Spend all the time you can with his truck and pick it apart so we can use that info to make yours better.
As much as I like linked up trucks I have to admit the bang for the buck with our spring line is pretty aweseome. They bolt in and work really good, and to re-emphasize, they bolt in. A couple weeks back I spent at least 3 full days working on the link system on Fred Williams' army truck and still had a few details to button up and we could have been driving the truck in a few hours if we'd run leaves. And that few hours could have been done in just about anyone's driveway with pretty minimum tools.

When I quoted them, they were charging about $110 more per spring pair vs. buying straight from Alcan.

Finally got that Detroit installed, had a bit of a time with it...

So I traded with Ethan (campfire) my gov-lock carrier for his open carrier so I could install my Detroit. Problem was, the carrier break for a 14 bolt full float is 4.10, and I have 4.56 gears while Ethan's carrier had a 3.73 gear on it. Yeah... Didn't think about that until after I'm trying to tighten down the ring gear bolts and they bottomed out before they got tight. Long story short, I ended having to buy the correct carrier and installed it today. Sorry, no pictures of the insides of the diff with the Detroit in there.

I can definitely tell that it's a much more aggressive locker than the gov-lock was, doesn't take much to chirp the tires in a corner and if I let off the throttle during a turn it'll suddenly turn sharper. No clunking though.

Next, I put some zero-rates in the front springs to bring the front end up after the bumper install, sits about level now.

I need to find someone with an engine hoist I can borrow to install the new polyurethane engine mounts, so for now no dice on that.

Bummer on the carrier. That means I won't be able to use the G80, either. :doah:

I hope that someday, more people will understand that ORD is not a charity, and they don't work for free..... They have done research to find out what design works.
Alan builds springs..
I have talked with the guys at Alcan and ORD, face to face about this. ......

I don't mean to knock them, I was just passing along information. I do not begrudge any business for turning a profit. Given their expertise, I see this $250 charge (I looked back through my quotes for the exact number) as an engineering fee which they earn via their GM expertise.

You should be able to machine the ring gear surface on that carrier down to allow your thicker gears to work. Anyone know of a reason he couldn't do that?

Other than taking material off something like that being frowned upon?

Realistically the time to set it up to machine and cut it perfectly true isn’t worth the effort when one can be had or traded for

If those are the 2" Rough Country springs I agree, they are not the best. I have sold 2 sets to customers one was in a 78 K20 the other is a 75 K10 both have de-arched the front springs and the K10 rear of the spring is riding on the frame. Less than impressed with their 2" springs.

Without looking back in the thread, I thought you had a set of Tuff country springs purchased from ORD?

I would have to look back through my receipts, but you may be right. But as far as I've heard, both are junk.

2" Tuff country EZ ride is what I'm running up front. And they were not what i would consider "cheap" in price. I was disappointed the moment I took them out of the box. Only 3 leaves total in the leaf pack. I thought Tuff country was a step up from Rough country. Apparently the similar name equals similar performance, just with a higher price tag. After a year of use, the truck no longer sits level. Outside of going coil, I've got one choice going forward: Save up, along with selling a kidney, and buy a set of ORD leaf springs.

Replaced the radiator just this spring and flushed it pretty good then. This is Dexcool puking out of the water pump.

I replaced it almost exactly 4 years ago, which was about 50k miles, so this seems a little premature for a pump failure.

Unfortunately, with how things are now, you got decent life out of that pump.
Still crappy for you though....

I thought about replacing the pump with the radiator last spring, guess I should've.
