The dipstick is just held on by a clamp that's bolted on the block with one bolt. I think it's between the back two cylinders.

It's probably not the torque converter, all though their cheap to replace, so I would recommend getting a new one when you put the new trans in. Sometimes it's obvious what's wrong with them (like burnt clutches or broken planetary assemblies) but sometimes you can't tell what's wrong.
