So I gave myself the ole reality check. See my thread in the lounge.

For those who didn't see it. Here's where I stand.

Shop is not done, been waiting to get back on my own stuff till the shop is done.

Reality check is the fact that it's just another excuse and I need to get my crap running again ( Horton specifically).

I need one Bay of my garage for customer stuff as I do work on others rigs. That bay is currently filled with a JK.

So my garage needs stuff moved out, condensed, tossed, given away, sold what ever for more space.

This journey has begun

This pic is from last year but it's the same space

It's soul sucking to work in there in colder temps so since I needed to work on stuff over the winter it just became a bigger and bigger mess.

So today I cleaned up some and put up an old cabinet.

You can also see the shelving I got and put boards around to make it stronger in the corner.

I have 2 nice metal tables I use alot.

Well 2 rigs isn't gonna leave room for em.

I started cleaning out the bench. Almost took one of the supports off hitting it with a heavy box. The top was hammered anyway so I thought well I'll just take the top off and fix it

Here's a pic of the bench when we first looked at this house.

It was never my intention to use this garage as my workspace so I never thought much about fixing it. You can see it's kind of chintzy

Took the top board off and this

One support and the 4x4 leg needed a light kick and out it came.

The other 4x4 support was........well here

Had at least 8 screws in both and neither were securely fastened.

So I thought I'd add a couple supports and put a new top on.

Then I thought, it's a wide bench why not narrow it up a bit, width and depth, well I kept the original length but made it 24" wide. Instead of the 31 it was.

I looked around came up with a plan, well a solid idea, well more of a vague direction really.

This is how it ended

I need to move some stuff and I will put in one more 4x4 support and get the top material on Friday.

It's 100 times more solid.

Ignore the odd spacing like I said it was a vague idea.

Gonna add a bit more bracing to the 4x4s but they are dang solid now.

Top will be 3/4" plywood doubled up.

That's the only thing I will have purchased for this bench rebuild already had everything else.

Oh and remember that barely attached 4x4?

How's this for an improvement

Make it work Eric! benchtop space is golden!!!
I still need to build a steel rollaround workbench for my new barn!

Nice works. I'm sub'd for motivation. I need to get in my garage and clean it out. I'm short on storage, but that's not excuse to be unorganized. I have a nice big metal bench that I could use to work on, but it's covered in crap so I can't use it.

Yup I need to clean my bench. All flat storage areas end up collecting crap.

So heading to town tomorrow. What material to top the bench with. One 4x8 sheet will let me double it up. I want it decently thick though.

Not doing a metal top for this bench

Was looking around at Home Depots website.

I think 3/4" thick.

How is MDF for a bench top.

I'm gonna paint it or stain it or oil it or whatever to prevent moisture intrusion

I'd stay away from MDF, structurally it's weak and will sag as a top. You can get 3/4" ply at HD.....

No top is gonna sag lol. I've since added more bracing so it will be easy to put another 4x4 in once I get the engine moved. I had alot of kind of scrap wood and just started looking at what I had and adding stuff for future bracing.

It all adds weight and mass. Two good things for a bench

It's awesome to see you out and about working on your pad again. Brother.

I would,'t use MDF for a top. 3/4" or even 1 1/8 ply if you only need one sheet. :wink1:

They only had the 3/4 Mike (@NorCal69)

So that's what I got.

Also got some 2x6x12 and 2x6x16 pressure treat to fix my shed with.

Over all a very long day today, was on the road at 6 am and just got back around 10 pm. But got stuff done. All I care is I got my wood!

So my vague direction with this bench rebuild increases in detail.

I've always thought adding mass to a bench would help with the inevitable bounce. You know hit the top with a hammer and everything bounces. So random cut boards got places.

Only new thing I bought for this was the plywood for the top.

So right before I put the top on

The 2x6 against the wall is to provide a solid space to put something against and to space out the top so it extends about 2" over the edge to be able to clamp stuff.

First layer

The second layer I'm gonna glue on. No screws. I dont have enough glue here to do so. Off to the store tommorow. Here's what it should look like all finished up.

Apollo approves.

You said you were going to glue it, clamp it and throw steel on it. The cat wasn't mentioned in the plan. What gives? I don't thing Appolo weighs enough for any benifit. :)

He is pretty big.

The other cats jumped on it and he got a bit angry. It was pretty funny to watch

Also getting glue tomorrow. So it's just sitting there

I decked mine with 1". Have had a complete small block on it.

But it doesn't have the cross bracing, glue, or cat like yours, so YMMV
