Every Part Is Replaceable
The truck needs a new name.

I introduce to you simply: The RedBurb.

I've been on the fence about personifying a vehicle by giving it a name. So instead of getting personal, I went with what I had already been calling it: The RedBurb.

I've also updated the overview of the build thread.

Got a few odds and ends to wrap up with the parents' mower, and then it's time to get back to work on this thang.

Fixing a zero turn mower may not sound noteworthy, but when I consider the fact that I’ve never worked on one, I think it is.

John Deere wanted $2,500 to replace the hydraulic transmission in this tractor, so my dad called me up and asked if I was thought I could do it, if he supplied the parts. My response was, “I’ve never replaced a hydraulic transmission in a zero turn mower before, but, I’ve done a lot of things that I’ve never done before and they have turned out alright, so, let’s give it a shot!”

Aside from cutting out part of the frame and turning that piece into a bolt-in/removable “seat crossmember”, it actually ended up being pretty straight forward.

I’m happy to report that it’s back in service and ready to return home. I’ll slap a pair of new belts on before the trip.

The whole endeavor saved my parents roughly $1,800, which I was happy to do. They deserve so so much more.

The Rusty Cedar Suburban is down to just the frame (well, and the front section of the cab which still has a few odds and ends I want to keep).

I’ve had this engine hoist for over 15 years I think. Last time I used it was when I bought it to pull the tiny 4 banger engine out of my jeep to rebuild the #1 cylinder. The hydraulic ram still holds strong.

Picked up this Amazon-special engine stand, rated for 1,500 lbs. seems to be holding up well. Some claim it holds a Cummins just fine, so I figured it would work for this old 6.5.

The 6.5, 700/205 combo, D60, and 14B are all tucked away waiting for their new home in the RedBurb.

Good help, the right tools, and no body make a huge difference. We had the drivetrain outta here in just 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Once the old frame is gone, I’ll work on pulling the RedBurb frame so it can be stripped down and prepped for its new fancy brackets. In the meantime. The roof is cleared of the factory rack and drip rails, and I can start cleaning it up so it can be painted and protected.

I’ve got the same Amazon stand and there is no way in hell I’d bolt a Cummins to it. Maybe a 4bt but not a 6bt. It was sketchy moving my 383 around with it.
 
I do not care what the weight rating is on an engine stand. If it is going to sit for a while, I cut a 2x4 to put between the balancer and the stand.

This is a great idea, I’ll take care of it in the morning.

It’s definitely easy-does-it moving it around the shop.
 
Progress is progress, no matter how small … I suppose.

The old frame is moved into the back corner of the yard and stacked with the oh-so-heavy roof rack and @AgDieseler’s sliders, which will get rehabbed a bit for this next burb.

Picked up an extra pair of jack stands and these casters that I’ll use with some angle iron to build a low-to-the-ground cart for the body that’ll tie into the front and rear body mounts. This will be what the body shell sits on while the frame is out. Casters don’t have a brake, so I’ll have to keep them chocked somehow when the burb isn’t being moved. Stands are for use while separating the frame from the body.

Once the frame is free it’ll get stripped down and receive some updates.



And, couldn’t help but slam the spare forty against the rear quarter to get a feel for how she’ll look.
