The RedBurb

Every Part Is Replaceable
You have been holding out for sure! Nice score!

That I have! Thanks!

I’ve been down a few different rabbit holes deciding on a transmission.

First was a 465, until Gear Vendors told me their OD wasn’t a good product behind an offroad truck.

Then I snagged a cheap 2wd 4500 and was going to rebuild it, until I added up the costs of the rebuild, 4wd main shaft, 4wd tail housing, and new gears (2 were broken), and it was more than the cost of a professionally remanned unit.

Then I found a company that said they would take my 2wd as a core and send me whatever rebuilt 4500 I wanted, as long as the 2wd case was good (it is) then they would have something they could rebuild and resell.

So I snagged up this early model 4500 with the granny low gear, and asked for a newer model shift cover.

Can’t wait to get this in the truck and make shifting noises.

You'll like the low gear creep mode. Same with having OD on the highway. I love mine.

Those springs should give you a ton of travel, are they similar to what @AgDieseler did?

I really like what you did with the frame bracing, I need to do something similar before I turn mine into more of a pretzel.

Yessir, I think perhaps a bit stiffer though, but, essentially the same setup.

Thank you. I am definitely glad I built the subframe while I had the frame out. I can already tell it’s making a huge difference.

This is certainly my favorite view so far …

Just wait until you droop those springs out and see how it looks!

It is going to be a while before I work on the truck again. To be honest, I kinda need a break anyways. It’s unnerving to me for the backend to not be able to support itself with just the main leaves, so I repacked them with 9 of the 12 leaves. Still stiff, so I threw all my random steel parts Ive had laying around the yard into the back to try to level it out. She still stands tall, but, it’ll all come down in the end. Until then, I leave you with these beauty shots …

Where are the 40's?

Gone in favor of the 37

Yep. What he said.

40s are cool, and maybe some day I’ll go back to them, but probably not. Not any bigger than 38s maybe.

I had a ton of reasons to switch back to 37s:
- too much work to do it and make it look right
- not practical
- body is too nice to cut up to fit 40s
- nowhere to put the spare
… to name a few.

Truthfully, I just didn’t like the way the truck looked with 40s. Plenty of trucks look awesome w 40s. @AgDieseler ’s suburban looks perfect with 40s, but mine just didn’t. I didn’t like it. In fact, when I compared it to photos when it was on 37s, I liked the 37s way better, I’ll drop some comparison shots below. The spare tire carrier, while functional, was obnoxious and made the back too difficult to get into. I can build a mount to secure the spare 37 upright in the same corner as the factory spare inside the cargo area (albeit forfeiting the 3rd row, but that’s okay). This body is the most pristine I’ve ever seen, other than our blue suburban. So I really didn’t want to cut it up to make it fit, and the body work to open up the fenders and make it look factory is way too extensive for my time and capabilities. Sure, the front fenders will need to be trimmed, but that can be done tastefully and if I screw it up, they’re replaceable. The rear wheel wells aren’t, and these 37s fit perfectly. Also, I specifically wanted a Maxxis Razr all terrain, and they don’t make them any bigger than 37s.

All-in-all, 37s just fit the bill better for the Swiss-army-knife kind of build I’m going for.

Also, I figure it’s about time I do a little more to protect this body from the elements. It’s not a 100% solution, since there are no doors or glass in it, but, it’s better than it was and it will be very useful when I drag the truck around front to continue working on it. The only area it doesn’t fit snug is the backend, which I figure is because of the missing doors and rear bumper.
