I am building my suburban with 37s.
I wheeled many places with 35s and never felt I needed more.
Then I got a deal on the 37s and I tried to see what I can do with them and decided it was about as far as I want to go so I am building it that way one and done.

It was worth a shot!
Been super busy the last few weeks. Not much has changed. Slowly disassembling the engine accessories so I can reseal the valve covers and install new pump etc. Put the new Advance Adapters bell housing on. Also dragged the truck halfway around the house. Making its way to the front so the engine can be installed once I am done with it.

I’ve finally torn into the 6.5. Ask @KirsL or @AgDieseler and they will tell you I have agonized over whether or not to do a full rebuild or just a reseal and everywhere in between. Right now, I’m settled on just a reseal and putting her back into service, but I reserve the right to change my mind as many times as I want to. At the very least, I am encouraged to find that the bottom end is 100% crack free. Here’s a sampling:
This is a huge relief, considering the engine overheated multiple times when traversing the Rockies back in 2020.
While the oil pan was off, I swapped in this high flow oil pump.
With the oil pan cleaned up, the bottom is sealed back up and the engine flipped over for work on the top end.
I eagerly swapped out the old pump drive gear for this minimalist version.
The air intake manifold is yanked, along with the old injector lines, injection pump, and valve covers.
This is where she sits for now, awaiting my next move …

Not a full rebuild. But when I’m only 2 steps away from being able to pull the heads, it felt irresponsible to NOT replace the head gaskets while I have it on the stand torn down this far.

Not yet. I’m hoping to not need them. This engine is supposedly low mileage, so I’m just looking to replace the gaskets while I have it down this far.
It’s been a couple years now since the engine has run, but I don’t recall any oil pressure issues. The new pump is more of an insurance policy than anything. David’s incident with his 6.2 had me wanting to do some internal maintenance on mine. He initially thought the oil pump had failed, so that’s why I bought a new one. It’s been on the shelf for a while and I figured it was time to put it in.
I don’t even know if it’s an upgrade. I did some research on my engine and it’s suppose to already have a high flow pump. So at a minimum it’s just a new unit.
I normally do the same thing, if the engine is out and the pan is coming off, I feel its cheap insurance to throw a new oil pump in.
Heads are off.

It's interesting to see different engine designs, those valves have a near zero angle by the looks of it, makes it easier to get small chambers and high compression, they surely don't need it for high RPM airflow.
And the lifter area/retaining method are strikingly similar to a modern LS layout under the head.

I did a thing.
New Promaxx heads for the 6.5. This made sense, since I really don’t know the mileage and condition of the old heads, plus the Promaxx have the diamond precups which are better for a turbo and I’ll be running a turbo. Plus the claimed-better casting yada yada. I figure it’s a good mid-level upgrade.
