The RedBurb

Every Part Is Replaceable
@F.S.F.W made his dash out of some textured looking black plastic stuff that might work if you wanted to make a piece to clean up the area around the radio. I can't remember what it was called or where he got it so hopefully he can chime in.

I plan on doing something like that eventually. Having it exposed like that makes me feel dirty and like I am doing the same kind of work as the POs.

Yeah my K5 still has a barely functioning factory radio and speakers. I need to get the money together to get one of the fancy ones that fits like factory without cutting anything but I got lots more important things that need money first before a radio.

I always wanted one of those fancy ones, but they’re like $900! This radio was free. I had just installed it in my dad’s truck then he decided he wanted a different one.

Got the tear down of the new column started during lunch. I will be re using the steering wheel, turn signal lever, and trans shifter from my old column as those parts on this one are pretty worn out. Everything else with this column is in great shape. Got the column housing cleaned up and will hit it with a coat of flat black later this afternoon. Tested the new ignition switch and it works. Am debating on whether or not to pull the new turn signal switch out of my old column and put it in this one, or just save it as a spare. The one in this column seems to be functioning just fine, so I will probably continue to use it.

This will be going in the truck tomorrow!

That looks clean! I've never thought about painting my column.

I figured I had the column out so I might as well. I used Krylon’s flat black camo paint which is advertised for being pretty good for this type of material. I also used it on my truck and had extra so I figured why not.

Well I’ve got the rest of it as together as it’s going to be, just waiting to go in and have the steering wheel added.

Something is wrong with the turn signal lever. The piece of plastic that it slides into doesn’t seem to want to stay seated on the arm that bolts to the switch. Net result is i get right turn signal function but when I try to cancel the signal or left turn signal, it slips off the arm and does nothing. I can’t tell if there is a piece missing or if it’s somethjng else. Maybe I’ll be able to rob some more parts off my old column tomorrow to get it working

Any reason why my oil pressure gauge would drop to zero when coming to a stop? Gauge returns to normal when driving. Engine does not appear to be acting differently. This just started this morning.

I'd replace the sending unit if it's going to zero. An open circuit would take it off the scale (high), going to zero indicates a short. I used to have a similar issue with one of mine.

Be sure to buy a diesel (80PSI) sender rather than a normal 60PSI unit.

Is it full of oil?

Yessir it’s purdy full indeed

Will do. Thanks for the heads up. Glad it’s not anything to do with the engine itself. Adding this to my rather long to do list.

Which actually got a little shorter today....

Nothing special to look at, but the new column is in! The non-tilt wheel actually sits at the perfect level for riding. Got to slide my leg under it when getting in and out, but I’ll take that over having the column bounce in my lap as I head down the road. Much more solid and confident feeling. Almost even seems to drive better, but that could be in my head.

It's possible for your oil pressure to actually be dropping off, but you would be hearing the babbitts clattering. I'm pretty sure you would have included that in your original post if that were the case. A short anywhere in the circuit could send it to zero, the sending unit is just the most likely failure point.

And then, I was able to return the 241 to the yard this morning in exchange for $165 of store credit. I’ve had my eye on a couple of fenders there and these trucks are apparently pretty rare in this area so I figured I would grab these while they were available.

That inner fender off the blue truck might look kind of rough, but it’s mostly surface rust except for one small spot that can be patched. The battery tray will be tossed. The inner fender off the white truck also has one small spot to be patched, but otherwise is rust free. Both outer fenders are in perfect shape. All in all, the set is in 1000x better condition than the set on my truck now.

I also grabbed the instrument bezel to replace my broken one. I like the solid black a lot better than the wood trim.

As well, earlier I mentioned that I had trashed my window rain gutters because they were in pretty bad shape. Well, turns out replacements are extremely expensive and impossible to find, and the gutters off both trucks were in perfect shape so I grabbed those too. Yes they channel down the backside further than the suburban channels do, but I can live with that. They’ll be painted black so they don’t stand out as much.

I also grabbed a rear view mirror, two sun visors, and a hood latch spring. I don’t need the first two, but I figured they were in good shape and while I have the store credit to spend I better get some small items while I can.

All in all, I walked out having spent $7 less than I had on the tcase. Sounds like a win to me.
