The RedBurb

Every Part Is Replaceable
So I finally decided to get off my butt and do something, so I went out to replace the thermostat and crossover pipe. Needed to replace the crossover pipe because the threads in the t-stat housing were damaged. Have had it sitting on the shelf for a year now. Anyways, get out there, get it all done and buttoned down, and overtightened the bolts on the driver-side of the pipe and cracked the flange in half. Didn't realize this until everything was put back together and cranked the truck up to find coolant pouring out the crack. SMH.

Been there, done that. Do you want a replacement housing? I think I still have one on the shelf.

Or you can break out the welder. :weld:

Already ordered another one off the fleebay, but probably wouldn’t hurt to have an extra. How much ya want?

not unless it happens to be 180 degrees outside today at your place...:D

I'd say it's stuck open...

Sometimes it feels that way outside .... lol.

And I pretty much suspected it was, since my engine wasn’t getting over about 110-120* unless I drove it at 80mph for 2 hours with the AC blasting.

Anybody got the part number for the gaskets that seal the two ports of the coolant crossover pipe at the engine block from one side of the engine to the other? Keep trying to google and am finding nothing. Or should I just use gasket sealer?

Put the old crossover pipe back in until my new one comes in. Nice to get the engine up to temp in less than 15 minutes again.

Next problem. Working on putting these LEDs in and only two of them are working, and one is kind of dim. Any ideas what’s up?

Probably. Did you paint the housing to make it more reflective too?

Nope sure didn’t, just replaced the bulbs. It seems though that if these wiggle even a little they will lose their brightness, but then will light back up at random. For instance, cranked up the truck and the fuel gauge gets brighter:

But this is what it used to be like:

If I had to guess, I’d say the bulb between the Speedo and the oil pressure gauge has dimmed, also the dimming feature on my headlight switch/knob is not working. For comparison, this is the grandfather-in-law’s instrument cluster:

Oh well. It’s done for now. I can live with it. But before I close for the evening, for your viewing pleasure, the cracked ears from over-tightening:

Bummer, but repairable. It takes a surprising amount of heat to do it right and burn out the junk. I always go to my buddy that has a big synchrowave.

I have scrapped a few of those and still have a few.
If anyone needs one let me know.
I have a few complete engines and a few being parted

I plan to hang on to it and get it repaired to keep on hand as a spare. Got a NOS on the way arriving next week but, heading to my parents again this evening and needed the truck running again, so I put my old crossover pipe back in for the time being (I was intending on replacing it because the threads in the tstat housing are messed up due to a broken off bolt we fought with a year and a half ago). It does the job but I want a permanent solution.

Led bulbs will not work with the dimmer unless you do a modification to it that I vaguely remember reading about.

I’m satisfied with it for now. Someday I may have to go back in and do something about the sockets so that they all light up the way they are suppose to, but it’ll do for now. On to the next thing!

And here’s what I mean about the finicky light sockets. Go out to the truck this morning, and the fuel gauge is dimmed again, but the Speedo is brighter, I TAP on the fuel gauge lens and it nights right up! Lol

Just an old truck doing old truck stuff I suppose. Oh well. There are bigger fish to fry in the freezer.

Oopsies, I forgot to check the stash.

For what it's worth, I painted my housing and changed to leds, and the result has been dimmer, not brighter.

There's a wide variation in brightness between bulbs.

No worries. I had actually already bought two by the time you offered lol.

As long as I can see all my gauges I’m satisfied. The only thing I can’t figure out is that my climate control is also suppose to light up but I do not see any bulbs for it anywhere...

3 hour road trip starts in an hour. Here’s praying for a trouble free trip...
