The RedBurb

Every Part Is Replaceable
On the last trail run my truck made an odd noise. I was sure I had blown one of the header gaskets or a collector gasket. It was in the middle of a long climb so I figured I'd investigate when we got to level ground. It went away before that and I have no idea what it was. :dunno:

So I know the feeling. Probably comes with old trucks running on a bunch of different parts that are custom and from various other vehicles. I guess.

I remember wheeling with a buddy of mine and his engine was knocking something fierce. We said screw it if it blows it blows. As we were driving along it suddenly got quiet but he was still driving. We all stop to take a look at the next obstacle and this guy walks up with a crank pulley in his hand and gave it to my buddy and said it flew off a ways back. Good times.

Crazy noises are creepy noises. I’m just glad it went away.

I’ve had stories like that from way back in the day with my Jeep. that was 12 years ago.

Come to think of it, it’s been that long since I’ve done any legitimate wheeling.

And I haven’t done a shakedown run on the truck yet.

This is gonna be great. :D:D:D:whistle::whistle::whistle:

On a different note, I whipped up some bumpstop extensions for the front:

Really, what I should have done, was cut off the shock mounts at the axle and welded new ones lower on the axle tube. The way this first revision of the shock mounting ended up, only gives me about 3.5” of shock extension at ride height, from a 14” long travel shock. I could probably get a couple more inches by lowering the axle shock mount. But alas, I didn’t have time, so I have to take it out of the bump travel, so I hopefully don’t bottom out my shocks.

Did a flex test today. I think I have a bit more room to squish the bumps and stuff a little more. But for the most part, everything looks good. Going to need to secure the brake lines out of the way and looks like the backside of the passenger fender may need a little trimming. As mentioned prior, I went pretty conservative with the bump stops due to way the shock mounting ended up. Yes, I know there was nothing safe about the way I did this. But no one got hurt :saweet:

Photo dump.

Boom.

Also, quiz: has anyone ever noticed that I had a rear quarter patch panel made out of ALUMINUM FOIL????

Yep. When I first bought the truck, the rear driver quarter was Toast (still is). So I cut it out, but didn’t like the gaping hole it left behind (still don’t) so I took some steel brake line and using the passenger quarter as a template, bent the brake line to match the shape of the wheel well, then taped it to the driverside and filled it in with aluminum foil. Here are some documentaries from way back when:

That’s all I knew how to do back then.

Well that foil fender has lasted a good few years now. But I was pretty confident once I started flexing and rubbing tires it wasn’t going to hold up and would rip right out, so it had to go.

But what do you do when you don’t have the time to weld in a steel patch panel? I don’t know what you would do, but I ripped it out, and screwed in a patch panel with sheet metal screws and permatex (as a sort of glue for additional hold). Then cut out more of the rusted rot and painted it all black.

I’m gittin purdy good at this 30-foot-looker thing.

@Bent77 does this mean I can be a body man now?!?!?

I know it’s not right, I know it’s all wrong, but dadgummit it’ll get the job done for now. That’s all that matters.

Looks great from my front porch!

Good news is I brought a saw zall and grinder for the other fenders when they rub

Okay good. Bc they’ll probably need it, and after seeing the work that one guy did on my rear driver quarter, I think a professional should do the next ones.

Just a heads up but your truck will flex and twist a whole lot more than you think when you get it on some of the trails in Moab so plan for the axles to move more than you think.
Better bring a trailer with you and I can round you up a nice Utah suburban for a body swap. LOL These too look decent and they are both within 2 hrs or so of Moab.

Man I looked at those photos and I got all flush in the face and lightheaded and what not ... lol.

That's real tempting, especially since the truck already needs a body swap. Won't bother me much if tires rub or sheet metal has to be cut away, I just wanna make sure I don't rip out brake lines or hydro-assist lines.

They even look like they would drive all the way back.

The last 5 days have been nuts, but I’ve really been enjoying meeting other squarebody guys I’ve known through ck5 and IG. 2,033 miles down with minimal issues. One of my favorite parts of the trip so far has been hanging out with @AgDieseler at his shop getting his sliders installed on my crusty rig. You’re a real cool dude man. Thanks for the time and the good talks. I took the family to the Arches today and we had a great time. Much more to come.

That is so effing cool I can't stand it. Epic road trip. I know I'm in the minority when I talk about road-tripping in a squarebody, but right there are the reasons. Memories with the family, meeting like-minded folks, and enjoying the journey as much as the destination.

Congrats dude! I'm really bummed I couldn't join in on the fun, but I'm loving the updates like this.

Have fun on the rocks!
