The RedBurb

Every Part Is Replaceable
I’ll slam the next two days into one post. After departing Dallas, we made a brief stop in Fort Worth for a drive-thru visit of the seminary my wife attended, and then we beat it on to Albuquerque, New Mexico, pulled in at nearly midnight Monday, September 7th.

The next day, we met up and had lunch with another squarebody suburban enthusiast (though I don’t think he’s on CK5): @g_square.d on the IG. He’s a real cool dude, with a real cool family, and a real cool suburban. I’ll say it again, the best part about this trip was all the people we met along the way.

After lunch, we embarked on our final leg to our final destination: Moab, Utah. There were a lot of cool sites along the way, even drove through an Indian reservation. About 7pm MT on Tuesday the 8th, we finally pulled into camp in Moab.

Till next time,

Cool stuff! :thumb:

I hope to get better about these trip reports soon. Between the holidays, house repairs, and illness it has been difficult to focus on this. But it needs to get done because other things have been happening with the truck that I’ve yet to post about because I’m waiting until I’m finished with the trip report. Until then, we went and did some scouting for some local wheeling yesterday. Didn’t find anything. But we did find some dirt to snag a couple pictures in.

No more blue bodywork?

Yes, I did.

Just for you, I put up another trip report post tonight. Just for you. :deal:

;)

Very motivational! I have some time off this week so I should be able to get another post or two in.

Today is a big day. Clearing out all the scrap parts from the rebuild. Pretty sure I have at least half a truck worth of scrap in my backyard.

My wife will be so pleased with me.

I’ll interrupt my trip reporting to share today’s events.

Truck did work today. Finally dragged all my scrap to the recycling yard. Probably about half a truck worth of scrap parts. All in all, 1,650 lbs of scrap. Never weighed the truck before so this was an chance to do so. Truck and trailer with driver came in at 8,000 lbs even. Then we went Christmas tree shopping and chopped up some firewood for another bathtub bonfire tonight.

Feels good to make good use of this truck.

For me, hauling away all the junk parts was a major milestone in the life/build of the truck. Ever since the Dana 60 and ORD suspension swap back in August 2019, I’ve been collecting these scrap parts off the truck. That was followed by the wreck rebuild. The final segment that I had been waiting on was the replacement of the rotten doors. With that done, all the scrap could finally go away.

Still have the front 10-bolt and the NP208 hanging around that I’ll try to sell. If no one bites, they’ll go to the scrap yard too.

It’s a new day, and a new season in the life of the truck.

I was thinking the burb hauling away it's discarded parts is kinda like it was cleaning up after itself. :rotfl:

All that beautiful sheet metal! :doah:

I mean...good job cleaning up the odds and ends. :waytogo:

Continuing that line of thought, the burb is hauling off the old 10 bolt and front suspension to a new home today, to a guy who will use it to build some kind of cool ratrod thing. I can get behind that.

Alright, time to play a little catch up on this trip report. May be more pictures than dialogue, or maybe not. Will see if the words start flying when I start typing.

I’ll also add that, we met several CK5 members once we got to Moab. I’ll make sure to name a few, but in complete transparency, I may not catch everyone. If we met, please post up and say a few words. You all are wonderful people and it was absolutely fantastic meeting so many of you.

Our first full day was Wednesday September 9th, and we let this day be a sight-seeing, rest-from-travel, and shopping day. I say shopping because between the time we left Florida and the time we arrived in Moab, a cold front blew through the area. Now, we knew this cold front was coming, but what changed, after we left, was that the temperatures dropped significantly further than originally projected. We were not prepared. We shivered our way through the night Tuesday night, but Wednesday morning, after breakfast, we had to stock up on jackets and blankets.

The rest of the day was spent sightseeing in the Arches National park.

I believe it was later that evening that a feller strolled up to our campsite to introduce himself. Turned out to be @ktmoutfront, seems appropriate that one of the two awesome dudes that organized blazer bash would be the first guy I met. Wade is a solid dude and fellow easterner, and I quoted him to my wife on Friday as we climbed the entrance to Hell’s Revenge. Anyone who has heard the story of Wade’s first time to Moab knows what I’m talking about! :D

Speaking of my wife, she was totally perplexed at the site of a stranger walking up to our campsite and striking up a conversation with me like he had known me for years. She even asked me, “How do y’all know each other? You’ve never met?” I explained that Wade recognized my truck! She’s relatively new to this forum life, but she’s catching on quick!

Later that evening, after the wife and kids were in bed, I walked over to the cabins and met up with some other CK5ers: @Bent77 @4door99 and several others (again, post up if we met!). Mark, the other awesome dude who organized BB20, informed me that we were the winners of the unofficial longest distance traveled award. Quite the honor!

The next morning, Mark, Wade, and a few others came over early for a sawzall party, because Thursday the 10th was a pre-event trail day, and they made it very clear to me that my unmodified stock fenders weren’t going to have enough clearance to not rub.

:hack:

Till next time.

Andy

I had fun drawing cut lines on your fenders with a Sharpie. But I was sad it wasn't a blue one!

I'll have to adlib peanut gallery comments as you go

The next day was Thursday, September 10th, 2020, and our first wheeling day. Well, an unofficial pre-wheeling day, and a dadgum great opportunity to test out the truck’s capabilities. Mind you, before this day, the truck had not been in four wheel drive with the new Offroad Design Magnum 205, with the exception of a quick shift test on my street, about 6 days and 2,000 miles prior.

The trail of the day was called Backward Bill and this was really more of a scouting mission to see if the trail was worthy of future BlazerBash events. To the powers that be, this one has my vote!

This was also my first time wheeling with a bunch of other like-minded squarebody folk. Got to meet a bunch of you guys, including @6872xtc @4door99 @fastazz81 (thanks for letting me borrow the tire deflater, btw!) @Capt Ron @Bent77 @ktmoutfront and many others (again, if we met and you’re not tagged here, post up!).

Needless to say, it was a very good day. The truck did awesome. Only had one issue with the tcase getting stuck in neutral, and that was only because I was still learning how to operate the magnum! Also had an issue over the next day or two with the transmission not wanting to shift into 4th/OD, but that worked itself out eventually.

I’ll post several pics of the day, but I’ll start with this video of the suburban’s first climb of the day and ever! For a first timer, it was intimidating, so I didn’t take any chances. I locked the magnum in double-low, and locked the Ox up front, tapped the skinny pedal slightly, and let the truck do the work and goat it’s way up the slab.

Love this video. Really, I feel like this video, and the miles driven to take this shot, demonstrates what the right parts and dedication can accomplish.

Here is a photo dump from the rest of the day. Anyone else that has photos of the day and wants to post up, you’re welcome to do so!
