The RedBurb

Every Part Is Replaceable
The front is going to need trimming as well, I'm on 4 inch tuff country springs, moved forward an inch and just barely had to trim for 37 13.5 tires, a 38 14.5 gets into the front of the fender bad.

Good to know.
I am going with 3" lift and 37x12.5x17 8" wide rim tucked in tight on the offset.
Hoping to get away with minimal trimming

I’m running a 37 on a 17x9 with the front axle pushed forward an inch and 4” lift and I had to trim the rear of the fender and the fang. Even then I still had some small contact.

Here's how the inner fender has fared. You'll see both sides have been freed from the bolt I circled earlier.

Yeah, I can see a second draft coming for the fender trimming. Which is fine. Me and the cut off wheel go way back. I’m not even opposed to going as far as ORD did with their convertible.

Hopefully Discount Tire gives me some good news today.

And then there was light, and it was good.

Already, I can see where the trimming is needed, but want to get you all’s thoughts also. Fortunately, there’s no where to flex out in my neck of the woods, so we have plenty of time to get this right.

I told my wife this morning I’m finally settled on tire sizes. In the last 5 years, I’ve gone from 36s to 33s to 37s and now to 40s. I know everyone is different, but for me, 40s fill the wheel wells perfectly and are proportionately perfect on this truck. I also expect improved engine response with the 4.88 gear ratio, particularly once I get the HX35/H1C installed this winter.

Did some cycling of steering today. Looks like aside from some slight adjustment to the sway bar, I’m in good shape for normal road driving, even with the wheels having 1/2” less back spacing.

Tomorrow is a big day with lots of good stuff happening.

But first, I need to get this explosion of tools and parts cleaned up.

Looks good with 40s! Also looks like you might be pretty good on the clearance too. Other than the front like you mentioned.

A lot was accomplished over the weekend. For me, it’s a rarity when things go exactly as I hoped with few complications, so the produce of the weekend has left me with a pretty good outlook for the week ahead.

When I first built this tire rack, I did it with the intention of one day mounting a forty on it. So this redesign isn’t for the purpose of accommodating a forty. I had a plan, but didn’t totally stick to the plan, and rushed the plan, and the end result was a product that I wasn’t happy with. Getting the forties early simply provided motivation to go ahead and rebuild the rack to something I’d be proud of, and we’re well on our way.

First, the side braces were cut out and the legs cut off. One of these braces was nigh impossible to notch correctly and ended up off centered on the leg creating a massive gap that I attempted to fill with weld. It looked like crap and I hated it. I also wanted to extend the legs so that the tire wasn’t so close to the doors.

Those outer braces ended up being repurposed as the new legs, and I pulled some scrap to add two additional legs, all tied together by some gussets that our good friend @stan1688 cut for me.

What’s amazing to me is that the finished product turned out exactly how I had drawn it up. That may not impress some who have been doing this longer, but that’s a big deal for me.

Next up is where the whole rig hinges on the bumper. Originally, I had it hinging on the lower bumper tube, but I just never liked it. It seemed too low for comfort, and turns out interfered with the shackles and the trailer hitch. This time around, we’re hinging the rig off the upper main bumper tube, which solved all of those issues. The latch point is also moving, but that detail is not yet baked enough for publication.

More to come in the next post.
