muddysub submitted a new Build:

The restoration/modification of Daisy.

it's sat since 2005, ive gone through phases of wanting to build it up, chop it up into a buggy, and get rid of it. hell, i've tried selling it twice, actually very glad it didnt go. for about a year now i've been in need of a project, the RC cars aren't doing it for me anymore. i was going to build a rat rod that a friend of mine is selling, but he bailed on me. needing a project, i decided (after my wife told me to) to dig up the sub and start in on it.

today we pulled it out of the corner of my dad's backyard where it's sat for 6 years. it was a good feeling climbing back into it and check it over to get reacquainted with it. it's sitting behind my brother's house now, i'm gonna get some plywood to put underneath it to have a solid floor to work on and yank the engine. this is gonna be a slow one guys, but i'm stoked to be working on it again.

enough BS, pics.

hooked up dad's ford and dragged it out.

the swampers didnt handle 6yrs of sitting in the sun too well

hell one of them gave up all together.

dragging it sideways with the ford blew the beads off on the rears, they're all junk anyway.

Good to see that you're gonna keep it. These big ole' hunks of pig iron make their way into your heart and make it hard to get rid of them.

yeah they do. i learned how to drive in this truck, its been in the family since '93.

This should be good :waytogo: Like the box you have in the back, I'll have to build one some time. Any info on it?

I built that back in 2002 or so. Next time I'm over there I'll get some measurements for you.

I'm pricing the engine rebuild right now. Probably just doing a .030" bore, a mild cam, intake manifold and some basic head porting. Also weighing the differences between an aftermarket TBI and rebuilding the stock with all the cfm-tech goodies.

I've been eye ballin this motor here for a little while. Comes with a custom chip too that should take some guess work out. I don't know how much difference price wise it would be for you to get one rebuilt though.

hmmm, looks like a nice engine, and it'd clear smog no problem i'm sure. i gotta hurry up and pay off my credit card, lol!

woo hoo! just scored a free cherry picker and parts washer!!!! picking it up wednesday when i get my new toolbox wrapped so i can start in on the sub thursday/friday.

I got along for a long time without a cherry picker..once you have one,you ask yourself why didn't I get one of these along time ago?

Good to see another resurrection.

Thanks for the link:waytogo: I have added it to my favorites.

Muddysub, Thats a great start for a fun project. I'm glad to see another burb gettin revived instead of scrapped:D

Oh yeah, Subscribed:thumb:

Well looks like next week I'm headed down to lucern valley to pick up some 37s for the sub. Hummvee take-offs from 100dollarman.com, can't beat the price and at 3hrs away, I don't have to ship them. Then I'll buy a groover and do some custom cutting on them. It's gonna be a camping/expedition rig more than a crawler, I'm sure those tires will work just fine.

the engine is out! took about 5-6hrs today, i forgot how damn easy these old things are to work on!! well, compared to the diesel buses i wrench on at work. my free cherry picker took a **** on me but i got it out. we lifted it and couldn't clear the core support. so we set it back down to shorten up the chain and on the way back up the cylinder started leaking really bad. i pumped it like hell and got it over the core support then it came crashing down to the ground, barely made it out. i'll have to get a new cylinder from harbor freight to get it over to my house and get it torn down.

i'll be picking up the tires next week. once its sitting on some decent tires i'll bring it over to my house to its new home in the drieway. where i'll start on all the other stuff like cleaning the fuel tank and interior, sanding the body, replacing door seals/window guides/weatherstrip, etc...

and i'm not sure i'll even bother tearing apart the engine. talked to a reman shop and a dealership about prices today. it just doesn't seem cost effective to build the engine myself.

the Chevy dealer wants $2200 for a stock replacement engine, no core charge, 3yr/100k warranty.

a local, well known engine reman shop wants $1195 for a stock replacement engine, with core charge, 7yr/100k warranty and they'll install the cam and intake etc i want when they assemble it at no extra charge. they'll take half the $ up front and the other half when i pick up the engine. they offered to give me a tour of their machine shop too.

seems like a pretty simple decision to me, now i just need some money haha!

Replacement engines are the way to go IMO. The best part is, if it were a DD and you did it right, you could pull it in the driveway on Friday night and have it back on the road on Monday morning. You'd be tired and sore as hell, but it could be done.

yep, as much as i'd love to build one myself, it just makes too much sense to buy an engine. a weekend engine swap would be no problem, i had this one out with just basic tools in about 5-6hrs. fortunately this isn't a DD.

pickin up some 37" H1 takeoffs from 100dollarman.com tomorrow.
