The Rubicon Trail: Trail Report with 146 Pictures.

I was looking through my photos again tonight and noticed that many of the ones I posted in this thread appear as though there's nobody sitting in the driver's seat. I just want to say that with the exception of one or two photos, all of them were "action" shots. My beautiful bride walked about half of the Rubicon to be our group's dedicated photographer. The ones where you can't see drivers are because we're hanging out our windows. :D I still have a bruise in my left arm pit... :doah:

Haha. Time for some half doors. One of the most favorite things about the jeep. I can actually see and have a place to put my arm and lean

Whats this "see" thing you're talking about? My view was of a hood, so I drove by braille.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I am so jealous of all your offroading adventures. Awesome pictures!

Yeah, I REALLY want to do a half-door project. I have some pretty good ideas for it, but haven't had the opportunity yet!

great pics (as usual) and great write up. thanks colby.

what would you consider minimum requirements, build wise, to get a k5 through there?

and fwiw, i like #111 for your submission to the calendar.

Minimum requirements are always relative to how much body damage you're willing to take. But....

With body damage, I think you could get through the trail with 4" of lift, 33" tires, and a locker. You would absolutely have to have rock sliders. If you're that low, you'd be catching your rear end of the truck on everything, so a fuel tank skid might be necessary too. I wouldn't want to do that, though. It'd be long, grueling and irritating.

My preference is that I wouldn't really want to be driving anything less than what I have ('90 K5 - TBI350/700/241/D60/14BFF/5.13 w/ detroit locker in the rear, 38" tires and 5" of lift with good rock sliders.) I enjoy a challenging trail, but I don't want to sit at each obstacle for a half hour trying to get over it. I also don't want to beat up the body of my truck.

#111 is a favorite of mine too. :wink1:

Ive been talking to a buddy of mine with a jeep about this trip. Hes been helping me work on my rig/ drink beer. :haha: But were serious about coming up. I gotta finish my rig and the weather has been brutal. But it about a month it should cool off enough to make some serious headway.

someday I'll do that trail. my rig is close to ready. It's almost like a right of passage.

By the time I was done on this ride, mine was probably shaved 1/4" or more. :eek1:

I know I am bumping an old thread but I just got back from Jeepers Jamboree and ran copilot with my buddy in his jeep. We ran from loon to tahoe and spent three nights at rubicon springs. On day three we drove back from the springs up Big Sluice to Buck Island and back. Pretty gnarly trip.

The thing that you just can't wrap your head around is the length and unrelenting terrain you encounter. With many trails it is just traveling from obstacle to obstacle but with the Con, you are always dealing with rock gardens and boulder fields.

I did see a K5 running the trail, and I plan on taking my K5 next year. Awesome trip
