The Shop Truck

1971 Chevy C20 with a custom flat bed.
I'm going to line up for the battle of the beaters at 3, but I'm guessing it's too nice to be considered a beater.

Looks like fun.

They will look under the hood and and move you up.

I wonder if anyone puts line locks on a single front brake anymore, for burnout boxes. We did multiple times in high school and shortly after.

We went through and got deemed "Bogus" which was no surprise. When we pulled up next to Freiberger, Dulcich, and Tony they started looking and I just dumped the bag, instant B on the windshield. We drove by the crowd with lots of cheering and thumbs up and put the truck on the trailer.

I will say, I've never gotten so many compliments and questions about any of the vehicles I've built than at this event with the shop truck. The event was a blast, it would have been nicer in another month though, we had the RV generator running non stop the whole time we were there. I believe it was 107 on Friday and 109 on Saturday, both days were record breakers for Tucson.

Now for the "to do" list before PowerTour in 10 days:
-When we loaded the shop truck on the trailer to head to Tucson we noticed that all of the speedway rod ends had blown out already... I ordered hiems with high misalignment spacers to replace them, but the installed width is 1/8" wider so I'll need to modify the spacers. I should be able to do that with my harbor freight mini-lathe, but we'll see. I could really feel something moving around in the suspension when I was in the burnout pit, and you can see where one of the suspension bolts was hitting the frame. I may need to clearance the frame where the upper link mount is on the axle side.
-We also noticed that one of the rear QA1 shocks blew out the seal already, I ordered a spare front and rear shock as well as 4 rebuild kits. I really like the way they work so I'll put up with this failure for now, but if it keeps happening we'll have to find something better.
-Power steering/hydroboost brakes really put a load on the pump in the burnout box. It did not survive, moving the trailer back to it's home was a struggle and it's not exactly where I wanted it, but I stopped while I could still steer a little bit. I'm going to try to set it up with an external reservoir, new pump, and a cooler before PowerTour so it survives autocross.
-I'm very concerned about the cooling and it's still supposed to be 100+ in 2 weeks. We need to get the hood louvers installed too. This should address that problem.

Time to get off the keyboard and get the shop truck on the lift.

It means he had more than $5k invested.

I thought they still allowed you to run but in the Bogus class. Or did they have too many to run this year?

They chose 16 beaters and 8 bogus from what I understand, all bogus positions were taken before I got up to the judges. I think there were over 100 cars in line to be judged.

Honestly, we were ready to go home anyways, we actually debated whether we should even get in line. We were going on less than 5 hours of sleep after a full day of hanging out in 100+ weather. We knew there were problems with the truck and that we'd be in the 14s in the heat of the day anyways, so we decided to just go through the line to show off the truck to the hosts and crowd, then head home.

We just got through figuring out how we were going to add a cooler and reservoir to the P/S system and got all the parts ordered, ordered a couple new shocks for spares, and 4 rebuild kits to have on hand. After lunch we'll pull the hood so we can do the louvers and then get the truck on the lift to see what else may be broken. There was a lot more oil on the trailer after the trip home than after the trip there, so we need to figure out where that's coming from...

I forgot to mention that I'd like to get the headers installed before this trip too, but that will be on the "nice to have" list, rather than the required list.

If we don't get the Shop Truck fixed, we'll take the Silverado, but it just won't be the same. That would be interesting on an autocross course though.

Someone had a bronco 2 in the burnout pit, he did the whole thing in 4wd including flat spins. It was absolutely insane, so much speed, using the whole pit and he was in control the whole time. Then, some guy with a turnt up TRX (ran 11s while spinning the wheels all the way down the strip) tried to go in with his drag slicks still on. He somehow survived his first attempt to get it to spin the tires, probably scared the crap out of himself and everyone else around the pit, and left.

I've got a few pictures from the Duct Tape Drags, and a few from the follow up work.

This guy pulled in while we were waiting in line to get in, he had a Sick Death Week banner, but he didn't race this weekend. I wanted to ask him if he was interested in a trade...

I managed to be in the front of the line on Sunday morning, that was our best run of the weekend with the cooler air.

Truck back in the shop showing off the various paint markings on the windshield. An official Freburger B (for Bogus) on the drivers side (hard to see).

Blown shock with bits of rubber stuck to it for some reason...

There's a bunch of rubber on the back of my license plate too...

Today we went through the steering system and ordered what I think we need to add a reservoir and a cooler. Hopefully that fixes my issue and I need to remember not to put the steering on the lock in the burnout pit, I'm not sure if that's what caused the problems or if that was from mashing the hydroboost brakes. Either way, a cooler and additional volume of fluid should help. Since we were waiting on parts for the majority of what we were trying to get done, we worked on the hood. Before I rivet the louver's on, I wanted to clean up the paint a bit and get rid of as much grey and silver I could. I think it came out decent, I still need to do some work on the front and sides of the hood though. The louver panels are huge and this should fix any heat issues I have for now.

We need to paint under where the louver's will mount after we drill the holes, but we ran out of time today. More updates soon.

It's a TCI 700R4 rated for 500hp which is right about where I am with the 150 shot. No issues yet, although sometimes the 1 2 shift is a bit delayed so I try to short shift it to keep it off the limiter.

Does it have the corvette servo? I would assume so with a rating of that.
