The Shop Truck

1971 Chevy C20 with a custom flat bed.
Nice crossmember fab. I really like those strong hand tables.

David
I got a smoking deal on it 10 years ago or so. I was at the Scottsdale Offroad Expo and IMS had it in their booth. I just mentioned to my wife how much I wanted a table like that and the salesman heard me, he said they were getting rid of their demo table cheap. I think I paid $1500 for it and all the clamps/tools.

Well, apparently I don't know what the f*ck I'm doing. First off, even with the new fans, it won't stay cool idling. I'm not sure how that's possible, but that's where it's at, even sitting in my evap cooled garage. Second, the A/C doesn't work, not sure wtf that's about but it takes a charge but suction side stays super low and it doesn't make cold air. Third, I took it on a test drive and lost oil pressure again, this one came with what sounds like piston slap again. Idling home through the neighborhoods was a blast with no A/C and having to stop every 1/4 mile to run the fans with the engine off once the temp got to 235.
Anyone want to buy a truck cheap?

Man, that has to be rough.
Sorry for you.
But I know that you have the smarts to fix it all, with time.
This kick in the nuts is close to vomit inducing..

That's an understatement. I don't even know where to go from here. Once I lost oil pressure the first time, shut it off and got oil pressure back, it would just go away randomly even at low RPM. It never went to zero this time, but it was down to 15-17. I did happen to be datalogging when it happened, so I'm pulling those logs right now (my wife is, I'm drinking).

If you work on stuff long enough it will happen. I had a lifter fall to the oil pan last cam swap.

Try again tomorrow.

Good news:
I cut the filter open, no glitter there either.
The modifications to the crossmember made it so I could pull the oil pan without pulling the engine or dropping the crossmember!

Bad news (scroll down):

Well, this appears to be possibly completely unrelated to the previous issue and completely self inflicted. I left the nut off the pickup tube brace when I replaced the oil pump...

So your pick up tube fell down?

So your pick up tube fell down?
It was still on the stud, but floppy. I'm assuming when the rpms went up, it got sucked down and blocked. When I noticed it, it was 1/4" or less from being seated properly. However, I had to shove the pickup tube around to get the pan off so it may have moved.

Being able to pull the pan, even if you can't get it all the way out is awesome. Crossmember mods we're needed, good work.

The never ending battle thing sucks.

It might not even need to pull the pickup tube down, it just needs a bit of oring sealing loss to not be able to pull the pressure. I know the nut was left off this time but I'd want to double check concentricity of the pickup tube/ oring area, and oring dimensions. If it's not formed correctly, or the pump bore is ****ed, etc.

Random pressures leads me to this, as well a the general quality of all components that require machined areas.

Just spitballing here.

Yea, that's the real kick in the nuts. If I had the datalog that I thought I was taking, I could have seen what happened better. I'm guessing that I lost oil pressure more than the one time I saw, but since I had left the Dominator set up to take system logs, I don't know. It didn't behave the same as last time, so I'm fairly sure this was a separate incident.
I couldn't sleep this morning, so I got up at 4 to go see how bad the damage was. I pulled the pickup tube and windage tray.
#3 rod bearing spun and was making the noise. It's going to need a new rod for sure, the crank looks OK though. I can't feel any of the grooves, but it will likely need at least .010 off.

Of course I can't find availability or anything out until Monday, so I have all weekend to tear the engine down again.

That blows, and the no data is the kick in the nuts when you're already on the ground. You can be certain it's a separate issue as the nut was off, just gotta hope you fixed the first issue. That's where the unknown is now, after you machine the crank and throw a bearing in it. Optimism and a healthy dose of staring at that pressure gauge.

Do you have a warning light gauge or can setup a flashing pressure warning?

I have a giant warning light that covers about 40% of my holley dash with a big flashing sign that says "LOW OIL PRESSURE", the problem was I was on the 101 in rush hour so I couldn't stare at the dash.

Dam, hard on the self esteem and willingness to continue.

The air movement battle I know well. Wondering here about your recent cooler stack changes. Iirc the fans did work before the changes.
Do we have a liquid line pressure to work with? Or only that the low side is very low.
My knee jerk thouggt is blockage in the high side, then possibly of evap freezing, which would both be a blockage and no cool air in cab.

Anyway attemt to enjoy the weekend. Know that we will suffer right along side you.

It reminds me of your saga with overheating a couple of years ago
