The Shop Truck

1971 Chevy C20 with a custom flat bed.
I'm going to dig in and figure out what the cost difference is. You guys are definitely swaying me on the manual option.

Both my wife and I prefer manual for just jumping in and driving, although the older we get that may be sliding more towards auto, the Shop truck is really easy and nice to drive.
I'm the opposite. I don't drive the 66 much because when I think about driving it my first reaction is "Ugh, I gotta shift that thing". Granted it is a dump truck trans with manual clutch. I think about driving the C10, it's just jump in and go.

New PB last night, [email protected]!
That's the only clean run I got, I kept spinning either right off the line or when the nitrous kicked in. I did back it up with a 13.161 and a 13.240 though, so I wasn't slipping that much. I'm not sure if it was the track prep or just the temperature, but I've never had issues spinning before.

I do have a set of Hoosier drag radials (275/40R17) in the shop, but the wheels were on backorder. They should be in next week.

Video to follow.

The trans cooler kept the transmission shifting consistently all night, no issues with slipping on shifts, which is possibly why I'm blowing the tires off now. On 13.24 run I bounced off the rev limiter for .5 seconds on the 1/2 shift, on the 13.161 run it blew the tires off when the nitrous came on and I immediately short shifted to second. I feel like if either of those runs were clean, they would have been 13.0 something.

Now that I'm thinking of going with a manual, who should I buy it from? I'm leaning towards Tick Performance, but I want to hear your suggestions. A stock T56 isn't going to hold up.

Tick or Liberty
Both offer upgrades, modifications, faceplating

While I'd love to do faceplating, this thing will be driven on the street more than the track, so I think I'll stick with synchros.

Both those companies do a lot of high abuse work for clutch drop heroes. Call and tell them what you’re up to.

I’d also suggest that you ponder driveshaft options, and add a loop

The one and only time I lost a driveshaft was on some MT ET streets. Cut lose at about 90mph at the track.

Worst thing I’ve ever heard

Did $1k worth of damage in 1995 dollars. Had to beat the floor board back down.

That was with the loop in place

Yesterday we took the truck out for a nice drive. I wanted to test out the cooling systems so we took a spirited drive up the hill to Payson. To be fair, it wasn't hot out, mid 60s, but the truck did great. I pulled all the hills at 80-90, sometimes that meant the converter unlocked. The highest water temps we saw was 195°F momentarily a couple times, it never even got close to turning the fans on (210°F). The trans did great, it only got warm on the steepest, longest hill and that was only 180°F in the pan, on that hill the converter never locked up and we were in 3rd most of the time. 80MPH with the converter locked up is about 2900RPM for reference.
We had lunch in Payson, then took the scenic way home past Roosevelt lake and through Globe/Miami/Superior.
