The Shop Truck

1971 Chevy C20 with a custom flat bed.
I think I'm just going to pull the engine, it's likely the easiest/safest way to fix my ****up. But I think I'm going to take today off.

In other news, the clutch line blew off my son's Versa on the way home. It's a weird setup where there are two positions the quick disconnect will clip into "bleed" and fully connected. It keeps popping off the fully connected clip and going to the bleed position, if we can't fix it with a new line I'll have to drop the transmission again to replace the throw out bearing again...

I started stripping down the engine today, but didn't get too far. I didn't want to wear myself out today when Amber will be out there to help tomorrow. If things go well, we'll get the engine out and back in tomorrow and hopefully have it running by Sunday.

My son got the clutch line clipped on, but he's not sure it's on all the way. He's going to drive it, but if it pops off again he's going to order the Nissan TOB and clutch line.

Here I am struggling to find motivation to put coolant in, mainly because I forgot to get distilled water while I was at the store… guess good ole az tap water will do.

Well, now it's got an off idle knock. I'm at a loss right now, no metal in the oil pan, no metal in the filter, all cylinders come up to temperature, good compression on #8, valve train all looks good cranking it over with the valve cover off, good oil pressure too.

Using a mechanics stethoscope I can tell it is on the passenger side, but no idea where it's coming from.

I'm not sure now, maybe I'm hearing things, maybe I've got a bad lifter, I don't know...

I can't hear it with the stethoscope now, all I hear is valvetrain ticking away. It's like a rumble at the back of the engine, you can hear it best when you let off the throttle and the engine slows down (exhaust is real loud), then it stops when it gets back to idle. I can't think of what it could be, it's loud enough that I think I would have heard it when we were loading the truck on and off the trailer even though it was only running on 7 cylinders.

I'm going to put it on the lift, sounds like it's coming from the flex plate or something at the back of the engine.

I'm just trying to decide how much damage it would do to drive it to Dino's and back.

I forgot to mention, we cut the filter media out and there is quite a bit of metal in there, looks like aluminum which would go along with the piston slap.
There was damage to #8 cylinder walls on the inner and outer side of the cylinder, dark marking and the faintest scratch that you can almost catch your fingernail on. I hadn't mentioned that before, but it seems more relevant now.
