Bumping this back up. Think I'm moving forward with this.

Gonna start a thread that will make Ryoken cringe in horror. Or laugh his arse off. :haha:

I'm posting this as a test. Got a new iphone recently and still learning how to use it.

These are some pics of what I have to deal with. The overall situation isn't terrible but it aint getting any better. And because this is a trail truck and has a history of bouncing off trees I'm not gonna kill all my time with extensive body work and my wallet with expensive paint. It's going to get a nice cheap coat of rustoleum.

Your original photo looks awesome, Brian. On another note are you going to keep the front fender badges? If not I'd be willing to buy them from you since I am missing mine and I cant seem to find them anywhere.

They're not in a condition I would consider selling. But I could give them to you. The problem is not being able to (or not wanting too) access the nut on the back side closest to the door. So the drivers side pulled the nut through the front hole from all the rust but the rear hole was solid and just broke the stud off the emblem. I suppose glue or clear silicone could stick them back on. Yours if you want them, just pay shipping. I was going to slap a set of the fancy new CK5 stickers on where the emblems go.

One fender mostly prepped. I think I will have to patch in some metal where it rusted through at the emblem. Blew some rusto primer on all the surface rusted areas. This fender isn't long for this world so this is merely a quick fluff n buff and slap some paint on.

Yea, I'll take them. Like I said I cant find them in any catalogues and here in Michigan K5's are getting harder to find let alone the emblems. Let me know how much and dont forget to include your time. Thanks, Scott.

Just got to thinking you might need my addy. PM sent.

My first ever patched in panel. Cut out the rotted section behind the emblem and made a patch. Fine tuned it to fit, held it in with magnets and tacked it in. Then I ground down the welds and finished it out with the DA. Welded up the other emblem hole while I was there.

I wouldn't be surprised if this patch "waves back at you" if you took a long look down the side. It sure feels like it will. I guess it'll just match all the other dents on this truck.

Contouring a small patch panel for the top of the bedside. You can see the rusted section I have to patch in.

It's funny. Typically things in the rust belt rust from the bottom up. This truck came from Texas and is rusting from the top down. I've got rust in strange places like the tops of the bed rails, the inner roof panel near the drivers sun visor, inside the pass door jamb about 1/2 way right about where the B-pillar meets the quarter. But the rockers, floors, tailgate hinge area, bottoms of the doors are all rock solid. :dunno:

not a fan of the hockey stick idea. but to each, his own. i enjoy the standard two tone look. one color up top, another below the side trim. anything else looks like it belongs on a sports car or classic car. ya know? but good luck! cant wait to see what you come out with

I haven't decided exactly what I'm gonna do yet. Still thinking I might paint the truck orange, but most likely not. Thought about just solid dark brown too. But a solid gray being a lighter color will hide problems better.

I really like a well done grey paint job, but be careful you don't go too light. don't want it to look like you just primered it after all the work you're putting into it.

Work? What is this work you speak of? :D

This is more of a practice kinda thing. A learning experience if you will. This truck was never a restoration candidate for me. The interior was wet, nasty and moldy. Every body panel had some sort of dent or other defect even before I took it through the woods. As an example, I just welded up a bunch of screw holes around the drivers window. Best I can figure at some point the window broke or stopped working and someone screwed a cover, like plexiglass or something, over the window hole. So, I'm using this truck to learn how to cut out rot holes and patch them up, weld up screw/trim holes too. It's nice cause I don't have to stress about things being perfect. I've done floor panel replacements and rust patches that would be covered by carpet, stuff that can't be seen. This is my first venture into body work that is in plain sight.

The light gray looking like primer thing wouldn't bother me.

So what are you putting on the backside of those patch panels?

I actually love your color combo, but its your truck so do what you will.
