The WARN 8274 & RAMSEY DC & RE series of winches tech info

score tonight but still not what i need yet ... but to good a deal to pass up .

Scored this pto winch in what almost looks like new inside under years of sun and repaint . No tags on it long gone . Got to call ramsey monday .

Its got a wide drum option . Gear ratio is 60:1 in the worn box . If you compare to the current RE-series its a min of 12k lb as the 10,000 and 12,000 both use the sane worm box gear ratio . But only the 12,000 gets a X on the end if the wide drum is used . Looka like its 125ft of 3/8" cable capacity . The std width drum is 100ft .

The roller fairlead on it comes back to ramsey on a search . Its got grease fittings even . Its BEEFY as hell and heavy .

new price is https://www.summitracing.com/parts/rwc-251154

Its even got this HUGE hook and chain setup on it . Short look online this is a top shelf brand and NOT cheep .

Got the old bumper center cleaned up . Removed the old outer chunks that were welded on . . And not that good i must say lots of cold welds . Little bit of cut off wheel and air hammer popped them easy . last one not mine but pic saved for ideas later on if need be .

I refreshed a Ramsey re-12000 not too long ago. Very easy to work on. I got a reseal kit from an online wrecker company. Service manuals are easy to find online. Not too sure on the PTO versions though

latest ramsey winch needed a new pressure relief valve . i never seen these old school units before so i asked over on the garage journal forum and they got me hooked up .

2nd down on the list under grease and oil . the old valve had a 5 on the top so i ordered the 5psi range units .

master gasket and seal kit on the way already for it . blew it apart and scrubbed it clean and already back together minus gaskets and seals . had to pop it apart to flip the gear box back to the normal position .

Brennans Garage recently got some 8274 motors:

multi spline newer start at 4hp i have found out . and to swap its direct other than a $55.00 gear that you swap over at the same time .

the latest units come with the BIG 6hp or 6.5hp warn motor and synthetic rope and now rated at 10k .

Does anyone know of a place to get an upgraded motor for this? I can find replacement but no upgrades in hp. Havent had any luck, but have heard of alot of companies from this post I never heard of before. Sorry for the hijack just seems like alot of relevent knowledge on this thread.

@formercruiserhead 100% not a hijack of this thread . thats what this one is for . winch rebuilds and mods .

these guys seem to be a long time seller and info on a motors for the winches in the aftermarket spec of them . i my self have never ordered but see them pop up a LOT on forums when searching stuff . https://www.dbelectrical.com/motors/winch-motors/

thats the same style as the ramsey for the motor and basic setup . not to up on that model of braden tho . any specs or model # on it ?

if its a worm gear hp is not going to get you more line speed and to much input rpm is not good for them . so just know this and understand its limits on any worm gear winch .

if you want line speed more than RAW pulling power of a worm gear you need planitary like most newer stuff or a warn 8274 . there the top dog on line speed and raw power but are limited as to being a up right front mount only winch as you see them all the time .

@sweetk30 thanks for the info. Mine works but has a cracked brush and housing is rusty from sitting on the ground for who k ows how many years. Just thought it would be nice to upgrade when I replace it. But if it wouldnt be good for it I will just replace it with a stock new one. Not in any hurry when I am out playing usually. To answer your question its an ec4-1 made in 1975 same year I was born.

Ok another question. Getting conflicting info on what gear oil to use. [Braden EC4-1 in pic above] Currently running SAE 80-90 as it says has the shear properties needed. However the manual I found called for something else that doesnt exist any more. Other forums guys are packing some crazy named grease which doesnt sound or look right. Any good place to get correct info?

the worm gear box side you prob found a spec for a 140 w oil . 80-90 fine or a oil with a 140 w in it fine . for as much as they get used fill it / check it now and then and enjoy it .

now the gear box side is a 30w if i recall my last ramsey refresh i did .
