"The white truck" My 89 V3500 **DRIVING IT

That distributor looks like a Jegs "in house" brand. If it is beware of the ignition control module being cheap Chines junk, and going bad after only a few hours of running. That is what my Jegs distributor control module did on my 1991 V3500 Crew Cab. It will be interesting to see how that TBI fuel pressure spring you bought works out. I have an adjustable fuel pressure unit (with original Gold colored spring) on my TBI that is set at 13-PSI.

I was sorta wondering that. It is the Jegs street fire distributor. Tried to start it last night and no joy. It popped the ECMb fuse the first try so I obviously missed something wiring related there.
I jumpered the red wire at the fuel pump relay and the pump ran so I replaced the fuse and cranked it over. No start. Fuse is still good.
Poured a little fuel in the TB and tried again. No start.
Checked all my plugs on coil and dist. No start.

I just called it a night at that point. I was frustrated and tired of working on it. The pump runs when jumpered, but I didn't hear it prime with the key to on. (not sure if it will prime each time the key is turned to on once it's pressurized) I have fuel at the Throttle body, but no spray or spark. :angry1::cry:

Check the oil pressure switch, and make sure it isn't grounding out on the firewall. I just went through all this on my truck.

I will check that. Next week when I am back from camping. I ordered a new Delco module and pickup coil just in case.

So after a nice long weekend of camping and a short work week I went back to look at this thing. Got a new module, coil, pickup, and fuel pump relay in the mail. Went down to the part store and exchanged the battery and got a new starter as well.

Key to on I hear the pump run for 2 sec..ok that's a good sign.
Check for 12VDC at coil and dist. Both good with key on.
Cranks, but no start.
Slave in a new coil just to see. Same thing no start.
Popped the new Delco module in and still no spark.

I started going through connections and just double checking things. My hot side coil weatherpack has broken plastic. Just to see I tried to install it the other way, and because the key way is broken you can install it wrong (I did).

Flipped that around and it fired right up. Driver side injector not squirting and it is running really rough. Swapped injector plugs with no change. Set timing to 0*. By this time the starter was hot so it wouldn't start again. Pulled the old starter and called it a day, but we're making progress!! No pics because #photobucketsucksabigone

So I swapped in a spare injector pod onto this thing so I could continue troubleshooting. Also changed the starter since it was being finicky last time.

Fired it up. Got good spray from both injectors. Timing was wonky so played with that a little bit. I couldn't get it to stay running at the 4* BTDC spec so it's advanced to around 4* ATDC right now. Let it run and come up to temp.

Oh and just in case anyone is following I have 20 PSI at the throttle body input with the Spectra pump and a stock TBI with stock FPR spring.

Anyone on the bookface probably saw I picked up a 1995 454 and 4L80e for this a few weeks ago.

20 PSI is pretty high, but maybe that is normal for a 1995 454 TBI. My 1991 350 TBI with adjustable fuel pressure regulator is set at 13 PSI. I had to crank the regulator up a lot to get it at 13 PSI. I am thinking of trying 4 Degrees advanced initial timing on my TBI engine as well. A guy I know told that the OBD I computers with a Brown and White striped advance disable wire can allow for initial timing to be added to it without the Computer trying to take it out. I am sure someone is going to say I am full of crap, but oh well.... I am the one putting the time money and work into my truck and not other people.

I run my Blazer advanced about 4*. It's completely doable. You just set the base at +4 and then reconnect the wire.

I wish I had more hose on my fuel pressure gauge so I could see what it does at WOT under a load. I guess I could powerbrake it in the street :burnout::crewcab:

Still can't get this thing to run right?

Had a crazy surge at idle. Almost dies then recovers. Unplugged the CTS and it seemed to get better.
Unplugged the MAP and plugged the CTS back in and it seemed to idle even better, but starts real hard and doesn't want to stay running in gear.

Also have a fuel leak at the return line. Think I might have stripped that fitting on the TBI... Ugh. Anyway if you follow the Trail rig build I picked up a 95 TBI 454 with a 4L80e that'll go in this at some point. Also picked up a VSS tailhousing for my 205. Washed the truck this weekend and put it away again.

Damn thats a nice collection

What's the plan with the 95 TBI 454? Are you going to rebuild? I think I've said it here before, but when I bought my V3500, if it had a TBI 454 in it, I would have just done a rebuild with some nice go-fast goodies in it and called it good. But since mine was a clapped out TBI350 that was barely running with low compression, and since I knew I was going to swap motors anyway, I went 8.1 instead.

The beauty of a 454 is the aftermarket is abundant, so making really good power out of them is not terribly expensive

Yeah possibly maybe. That is the eventual plan. The current 454 leaks from just about every place it can possibly leak, and is a complete turd. I only keep messing with it because it's in, and functional for my current needs. I gotta get the trail rig out of my garage and then maybe go through the later TBI motor and get it ready to swap. The guy threw in a set of 049 heads too. I was contemplating a Roller cam set and a Dynamic EBL deal, bump the pressure, exhaust and should be a decent set up.

Not sure of what you want the overall uses to be, but that would be a good runner for sure with that plan :waytogo:

I would like for it to be an all around useful pickup and secondary tow rig. The way it runs though towing is a dreadful chore.

Any updates on this thing? :zombie5:

You didn't sell it right?

Naw I still have it. Haven't done much. It ran very poorly after I did the new distributor and rebuilt TBI. One injector wasn't firing so I swapped pods. Got both injectors firing and was attempting to set timing. Had a crazy surge going at idle so I couldn't get it timed. Then I noticed it was leaking fuel from the fittings on the throttle body. I parked it and havent looked at it since.

The trail rig build has been hogging the garage up for awhile now, but we're getting closer to it running and moving again. Not a great time of year to work on the crew cab outside.

Haven't touched the new 454 either also because the garage is full.

Since it's starting to feel like spring out and I am going to need this thing to move a bunch of dirt for the garden I spent the morning working on it.

The injector pod broke around the return fitting and was pissing gas everywhere. I swapped the original pod housing back on and flipped the injector that wasn't spraying around and it starts, runs, and moves. Engine has a pretty good tick as well as an exhaust leak so it sounds like crap, but it lives again.

It still randomly will pop the ECM B fuse, but it seems to be only on the initial time I try and start it. As soon as I put a new fuse in, it will start and run. If I jumper the relay before I try starting it and make the pump run, it'll start without popping the fuse. I'm kinda stumped on this. I have a new relay I might throw in just to see.

This motor is a turd and I really wanna throw the other motor in, but space is my enemy here. I don't want to do it in the street. The garage is occupied with the Blazer. I suppose I could get some sheets of plywood and do it in the side yard.. Hmmm

Popping the ECMB fuse usually means there is some kind of a short in the fuel system wiring. I had the same problem on my V3500 Crew Cab, and it turned out to be a fuel pump that died and was shorting out internally.
