The Willomet Charger

A desecration to Mopar nuts everywhere, this is my protouring, LS-powered, 1970 Dodge Charger; built at my shop, Willomet Motor & Fabrication.
Same fit with an OE lid. The quarters tweak easily to match. AMD designed in some pretty generous adjustment. There are slices in key corners that aren’t there in my NOS 1969 quarter that I have as a reference.

That shot makes that thing look a mile long. Those steam roller tires gonna fit or you gonna have to mod the fenders?

It’s 17’2” long as it sits. I’m going to have to reorg the shop space.

All the fender openings will get some treatment. The front suspension is 2” forward from stock. I’ll probably raise the openings 2-4” in a nascar-esque cut that maintains the OE reveal.

Will you be running 1968 side markers or modify to the 69/70 style?
They’ll get filled. 68 markers are just smaller and easier to fill. That’s in addition to modifying the front of the fenders to a 1970 profile.

In a good sign, the fenders were level to the frame, which is absolutely level, out of the box. That’s probably the last win for a while.

The doors are pretty far out, and my buddy and I are taking the weekend to get it as close as we can before I start slicing panels.

Spent a day tweaking the doors. They open and close easily. Also, we put the tram gauge on the body and confirmed key dimensions side to side are identical.

With the fenders on and roughly gapped, the speedkore hood fits just fine.

Lots of fitting remains, but this is a milestone I’ve been looking forward to.

This is some exciting progress. Looking like a car now.
Ever since the AMD pallet arrived, this moment has filled an ever increasing part of my imagination. This was my super bowl.

…your welding project just turned into a Charger.
That is the perfect encapsulation of the build to this point. I'm stealing it.

Leaving the hood raw carbon?
It's tempting, but the plan is for everything to get paint. Speedkore offers this cleared and buffed to a high gloss shine, or raw from the mold. This is the latter. It's less costly, and the theme of the car is definitely built around the Lotus Type 39 color plan.

There's also a fair chance I will finish the work to the front fenders (convert to 70 profile, wheel arch 2" forward with nascar cut, '70 challenger style flares) and head up to Munssey to pull a mold. The fenders and quarters each weight about 30 lbs, and all together the car gained about 175 lbs in the last few weeks. A simple one pull carbon fender (no inner structure like the trunk and hood) will probably weigh in around 5-8 lbs, so it would be cool to pull as much as 40 lbs off the front end.

Tonight, I have to reorg the shop, dispose of carboard, and generally think about how I'm going to make progress on this seventeen-footer.

With some of the carbon drag cars now they are using candy paints, so it has a tint of color with gloss but you can still see the carbon through the color, it looks quite nice, and a translucent green carbon with an opaque yellow stripe could possibly be an excellent combination. As a side note everyone in green bay will love it.

We might play with some of this. Gabe talks me into a lot of things.

Also, we’ll have to “gold up” that yellow stripe. You’re not the first to identify the cheesehead trigger warning. Seriously. I had no idea.
