The Willomet Charger

A desecration to Mopar nuts everywhere, this is my protouring, LS-powered, 1970 Dodge Charger; built at my shop, Willomet Motor & Fabrication.
I’ll mig them sober.

Heck Man, I thought you were a pro at this stuff? You’re going to get it too hot and warp the hell out of it.

Even beginners know it’s tack, tack, sip, tack, tack, sip, sip, tack, sip, sip, sip...... what were we doing? :)

It’s cold in Dallas, so I was in the shop working on the Charger. The truck will keep until tomorrow.

Rockers are assembled and ready for trial install. More junk @Deuling made.

Gussets welded. No Shiners were harmed in the making of these rockers.

Even with patience, a fixture table, and an air quench, there was still just a little bit of movement I had to take out - about 1/10” at the center.

The mating faces are primed and coated in 3M weld-thru.

That’s where I left it. I’m going to put the assembly on the drill press tomorrow and slug some 3/4 holes for additional plug welds. Then, onto the car.

Shiner time.

First install and fitment of the Rev-1 rocker assembly.

The rail extends to match the rear of the front fender opening, providing maximum opportunity for a big front torque box.

The rear is inset 1/8”, as the rear most frame tie will plate all the way to the edge of the outer rocker. C6F48870-3E30-4D50-AE45-E8BB90B41312.jpeg

Still some trimming and fitment, but it fits well.

Whatever the number, and I sure don’t know it, I’m comfortable rounding to “a lot more than factory.” Even still, it’s impressive what folks can do with the factory 14/16ga unibody.

I pulled down a fender, and checked the rocker beam was within the planned tolerance.

I was just a bit too long - about 3/4” visible from rear edge of the fender opening.

I trimmed 2.75”, which I think will be enough to give a small margin for scrub radius.

This, plus lots more fitting and install prep. Hoping to burn it all in tomorrow.

I actually stole the idea of doing videos from you. I liked the ones you did of Ethel after the 5.3 swap. Even 10 photo carousels aren't as descriptive as a good 1:00 video.

It's good to spend more time on the car. There are a lot of chassis problems to solve, and I keep reminding myself why I'm doing it this way - because stroking an $18,000 check to the Roadster Shop is not in the cards.

Finished fitting the driver rocker and beam, and now I’m just working on the passenger side.

I’ve held off burning in the driver rocker until the other side is done - want to make sure they’re exactly the same.

Thanks for letting me cut you some parts. I love seeing things that I cut that were in my hands a few days ago being put to use. Way too cool.
Of course! Thank you for the quick turnaround. It's well worth the flat rate postage to support your growing business.

Friday is almost always a decently busy workday. By the time I get out into the shop, it’s close to happy hour, which we like to observe with a vengeance, and therefore there’s not enough time to do large tasks/projects. So, I reserve it for cleanup and organization for the weekend - full sweep and light put away as prep for my weekend checklist.

This week, while at Discount Tire getting a patch in one of the suburban’s MTRs, I made a deal on a new tire.

For mock-up reasons.

There a good bit more boogered up steel on this side, plus some repair of the PO’s work, if you can call it that.

Morning run to Discount Tire; I have a mock-up tire in stock.

That’s bottomed on the inner fender brace, so it will take a bit of doing to get these to fit. Most folks don’t run anything larger than a 245 front, because it’s easy.

I want the grip and turn in control a 305 should provide, and I’m willing to do all that is necessary to make these fit.
