Theft proofing a K5

As a teen,I had trouble with other jerks/punks in the neighborhood breaking my radio antenna's off,on my old '63 VW Beetle...they also tried breaking into it to swipe the 8 track & speakers too..

After replacing the antenna about 3 times,my friend said "we need to make a booby trap and get back at these jerks"..

He was pretty good with electricity & wires..

He told me how he'd read about guys rigging up an old Model T "vibrator coil" to a car to shock anyone who touched it..
"But I have another idea"..

He got a house extension cord, one of the cheap brown ones, cut off the end that had the outlets on it,and stripped both wires back about 6"..

He wrapped one wire around the base of the antenna mast--and he asked me to go get a metal coat hanger--he took it and cut it apart, used sandpaper to shine it up clean and bare of any coating, and wrapped the other wire around one end of it...then he shoved the other end into the ground next to the car, where you'd stand to mess with the antenna..

That night we plugged the cord into an outdoor outlet on the back of the house about 10 feet away, and he watered down the dirt around the coat hanger..then we went in the house..and waited..

It was maybe an hour later we heard a loud "YAAAAAAAAAAAHH" outside, and I got up and flipped the outside light switch on,and there was the kid I'd suspected of being the culprit,on the ground twitching...

I ran outside and pulled the plug on the cord out of the outlet...thought sure he was DEAD,and I'd be hauled away for murder one !....but he got up about a minute later, looked at me,and RAN as fast as he could to his house..

No one ever touched my car again..

But I would not reccomend this as a deterrent today..laws are different today than in 1976...the kid actually told a cop who lived in the neighborhood what I did,(hoping to get me in trouble) ,and what had happened to him--he just laughed and said "That'll teach ya to screw with other people's property ,and trespassing is not legal either you know "!..:D

Wow. Thread ended with that story? Damn!

Back to the dropping air in the tires and pumping back up... there are 4x4 folks who use a multi-hose line setup to pump up all 4 tires equally at the same time. If you have a larger air compressor, that’ll work fast. If not, I have a MasterFlow Tsunami pump that works pretty fast and will not burn out. Some guys mount the pump in the engine bay for use in cases of switching from trail riding back to street. Some say they are up and running again in 8 minutes. There’s an easy attach clip that you can add to the setup which allows you to by-pass having to screw on the threads of the stem. I have that for mine.

Post a couple of these in your drive

So for whatever reason my K5 won’t fit in the garage. I’m not sure if it was the angle of the driveway on our old home and this driveway being flat.... Either way my truck has to be parked outside or I switch to 35" tires down the road that should, I think give me the clearance I need.

Garage height is the same as my previous home or my wife just freaked out as I pulled close and just said the truck is to high. Anyway.....

So I’m thinking just removing the battery when it’s parked for now. I can park in the driveway and just park one of my other vehicles behind it. But I have a gravel area next to the drive way that can work unless the HOA balks at that idea. I did see others around here with boats etc parked in the same spot.

I assume a kill switch can be installed but until I can do that.... any suggestions?

Can I let air out of the tires?

I have a problem with my ignition cylinder that I haven't fixed yet so I put a toggle switch and push button to start. I also put 2 battery disconnects in the engine compartment. They have those plastic removable "keys". Turn the key, remove it and the battery is disconnected. I live in the country with dogs and the Jimmy has a 425hp small block 400 with dual exhaust and 24" glasspacks so that might have something to do with it too.

Temporary theft deterrent, battery out, I put a heavy duty chain from the brake pedal to the steering wheel.

Chain wrapped around steering wheel and brake pedal has their own heavy duty padlock. My other car is parked behind it with the truck close to the garage.

So it’s fine when the car is parked but hopefully what I have will work enough when both cars are gone... If not, then hopefully Hagerty won’t screw me if it gets stolen.

The other day I tried to drive it in the garage just to see how tight. The roof where the shell connects, runs just high enough to put a mark on the garage door entrance. This was at running tire pressure.

So I may have to mess with how low tire pressure wise the truck will actually go to squeak in, if can it at all.

How much does that wooden door sag? Looks like it’s wide and heavy. If there is sag you could try running a cable from end to end on the inside to help with that. Could give you that extra inch or two you need.

Here ya go...

Ah, I see. Pic in original post made it look like an old one piece wooden door.

Looks like that door isn’t up all the way. Any way to ‘help’ it go more?

Rope lock or chain through the CV joint and around the frame. Kill switch.

All depends how often you use the truck. The chain method works well if it’s not used often. Even less often? Pull a couple tires, whatever.

Chain plus something to make noise if the coil/starter gets power. Not a store bought something, homemade is best. Trigger the horn to come on and stay on unless you deactivate it first. Rather use a siren? Make sure to hide it.

In the summer I don’t see myself driving it to much. It’s miserable right now in AZ. I considered pulling a tire, which if the air-down doesn’t work I may do....

Thanks

but it's a dry heat which I would take any day. 117F in AZ is better ( IMHO) than 75F in Mississippi.

Typically, yes. But we are in “monsoon” season. So we have some humidity but certainly not Southern humidity.

wait Monsoon season it's to early for Monsoons. Gonna be in Havasu next weekend, oh well guess we'll stay on the lake :saweet::waytogo:

Generally, the 2.5ton guys use a heavy chain similar to what you have. You may want to invest in a better lock though. After watching some of bosnianbill vids or lockpickinglawyer on youtube I wouldn't take a free one.

Actually the weak link in that set up (no pun intended ), is the steering wheel which can be cut through in 30 seconds with a hack saw. Bend at the slice a little bit and the chain falls out. IIRC the wheel is just plastic ... maybe with a small amount of metal inside. That’s what those bars that go from the brake to the steering wheel are useless.
