Things were going so smooth, right up untill !!!!!!!

Looks like it snapped right where the truss ended...

I think another D44 with a more cleverly designed truss/ gusset solution should be good for 18 years more.

Thats what I'm thinkin. This one is only version 2.0 Remember way back when I hucked it down a dune and received 2 big smiley axles.

Wow. I have bent 2. But that was hucking it over stuff. I hooked a berm in the desert once so hard it spun the truck around. But never anything like that.

This says a lot about wheel spacers. You managed to break an axle tube before anything went wrong with the wheel spacer. Is that an aluminum or steel spacer?

Look at what dueling did for his truss. It is similar to yours but with more beef.

So, Chevy D44's axle tubes can be 3/8" or 1/2" thick depending on the original application.

I wonder how many PSI or Ft Lbs of torque it takes to shear an axle tube like that... must have been one hell of an impact! :yikes::yikes:

Looks like the weld at the end of the truss was the starting point of a fatigue crack. That means the housing was bending at that point due to the sudden change in rigidity (trussed vs not trussed). I would just extend the truss from C to C and add cross over steering to avoid interference.

Wouldn't a 1969 front axle have drum brakes and a enclosed axle
u-joint ?..
Most all the original 1/2 ton 4x4's that vintage I have seen were..
I'm probably wrong but I thought the open knuckle ones didn't start until '71-72 when they went to disc brakes..

Lucky for me it was only 25 minuets from camp but unfortunately on the back side of the dunes. It's a bad feeling when this happens at 40+ in the whoops

Crazy carnage, glad no one was hurt. A couple comments, and tell me if I'm wrong because I can't really see here, but the axle tube break looks very fresh, but that truss end looks very dirty like it has been cracked for a long time. Or is that just the end of the truss after you took the u-bolt plate off? I don't see threads so it looks like the truss may have broken a long time ago? Or I just can't see the threads in that picture?

Man I've been running those wheel spacers for at least 8 yrs --Aluminum

Spacers do add quite a bit of leverage to break stuff...(unless it's just to run a large offset wheel at the same overall width)

One of my friends had a go fast suburban and he trussed from c to c on the bottom of the housing and heavily braced the top.
Had the bypass mounted very near the c.
Held up good on that thing. I swear it spent more time in the air than on the ground.

I have no complaints about my artec truss except it’s stupid high. It’s kept the front happy and straight so far! I guess that’s my fault for going 1tons. I kinda want to switch to a 44 or ten bolt for ease and more uptravel.
