Thinking about buying a 2012/13 JK unlimited

It's a 11 rubicon, I'm trying to put jeep down but it is seriously horrible. She had a 08 we traded in on this one....... It was about the same. But I did hear the new motor rocks. I think the Sahara has 3:73 and rubicon are 4:10s

Notice the OP isn't asking about the older 3.8L Jeeps.

I haven't personally driven the newer ones, but I find it hard to believe it's more than a slight improvement. It's got less displacement, and still a 6 cyl trying to drag around a heavy ass vehicle. The 4 door on 35's is as heavy as a K5 (without 1-ton axles).

I haven't driven either one so can't comment on the seat of the pants feel but the numbers are - 2011 and older 202 HP, 2012 and newer 280 HP, that's a 39% increase in HP. I would think you could feel 39% more HP. :dunno:

Not to mention more HP than a K5 ever came with.

A lot more.

You think it gets better gas mileage then the f150 but, once you raise it and install 35s, They suck big time. I have an 08 Rubicon unlimited with the old engine. It is a dog in comparison but, the gas mileage is about the same. You will not be happy if all you do is drive back and forth to work. However, if you plan on 4 wheeling, that's a diff. story.

My friend with the rubicon lives out in Colorado Springs and last winter we had five people in his Jeep with all our ski gear and we were cruising up the grades and passing people to get to the ski slopes.

I can't argue the numbers I guess. But those horsepower numbers are probably at 3500 RPM or someplace you never operate. Do you really think you'd prefer a 3.6L in your K5 over the 350? (Honest question BTW).

If they keep the convertible and solid axles, and offer a V8 Hemi in them, I'll think about an upgrade. Otherwise it's not worth the trouble and money.

I'd rather drive my 27 yr old k5 over the jeep. The jeep has a little over 20,000 on it. Would love to do a ls swap on it, the jeep it's self is awesome, just no power.

A guy here in town had an '08 2 door auto and then traded for a '13 2 door Rubicon. There was a huge difference in power which was a lot more than just the slightly lower gears in the Rubicon. The max power is at a higher RPM for the 3.6 but the engine also has a higher redline. This guy daily drives it and also is off the pavement almost every day...but everybody's perspective is going to be different.

My brother in law just traded in their rubicon unlimited because it sucked gas, was noisy as hell on the highway and had no power. Don't recall which year but I want to say '11.

He must never have had a "real" Jeep then. This thing is like a Caddy compared to a TJ with a soft top, not to mention the older YJ and CJ. As for gas, what do you expect for a 5800 pound vehicle shaped like a barn door. :D

I love my Jeep, but would never recommend it to a generic person who just wants transportation. You pay in almost every other way for the Jeep-ness of it. At the same time, it's still a modern vehicle that starts instantly in all weather and will be reliable for years. Plus it cruises most trails out of the box with no effort, while you sit in air conditioned comfort listening to the radio. If I can get my K5 to ride as smoothly, I'll be very happy.

Well, I didn't want to tell him "I told ya so" but they bought it for his wife to drive back and forth to her job about 40 miles way. She doesn't wheel, she likes quite smooth gas sipping comfort while she drives. They live in the country with lots of hills and the vehicle they traded for is 2wd. They said when they traded it that they only need 4wd maybe a week out of the year so didn't want to pay extra up front and for gas. When it snowed a month ago they started talking about trading it in for a 4wd. :doah:They have two crew cab duramax trucks that both have 4wd. :doah::confused:

Well I test drove the white wrangler yesterday. Nice rig actually. The brown leather is very nice quality actually darker in person than it looks in the pics.

A little disappointed in the power, but it's not bad. Fun shifting gears- all 6 of them to row through going on the highway. It did pop out of gear at one point while driving in the city. And comparing to other standard vehicles that I've driven the stick does feel a little more flimsy.

Overall I like it. Just still not sure I like the idea of having payments :doah:

They have a new red ecoboost f-150 for the same price that I'm going to test drive and I'll try the black jeep too with the auto before I make my decision

Or just dump the same money into making your blazer awesome! :D

Thought about that too (keep going in circles).. throw some saddle brown king ranch heated leather seats in the K5, rebuild the old 6.2 and throw that in maybe with a turbo and an NV4500. Put the half cab kit on for the winter (smaller cab to heat) and just drive that while continuing to improve it. Then there is upgraded smooth suspension, nice premium sound system, dynamat, etc :D

No time for all that work though!.. :doah:

For $30k you could drop it at a shop and do the whole wallet-job thing. Half that really. I'm not being totally serious, because I caved and got a new vehicle recently, but it does seem like it could be done. Part of my motivation was to get an easy family hauler too. K5 can't do that in a way that suits the wife.

He lives in Canada. Daily driving that in the winter means rusty ****.
