Does it run?

What has he said about the condition of the motor and is it drivable? It appears to be in high grass and weeds, which indicated to me that he hasn't / can't move it.

he says it runs good and "The blazer starts up, but there is no gas tank "

that's convenient....

Take a mason jar full of gas and 6 feet of 3/8 inch hose...attach it to the fuel pump and make him start it and prove that it runs...if it does, then offer him $500

You will have $500 in it for towing fees and and a gas tank...not to mention the engine may be in bad shape after setting for so long...I don't have a good feeling about this one for you...do you have the money to take it to a shop and just say "Fix it and send me the bill"?

no dont think i have the money to say fix it and give me the bill unless it isnt that much$

im not sure for 500 i think i would have to buy it

For $500, if it's too bad to restore, you could part it out and make some money. That interior could bring some bucks.

Absolutely...I would pay at least $400 for those seats and the top rails.

I am not trying to discourage you, I am just trying to say that you have no idea how much money it costs to do even small things and that's if you can do it yourself.

For example...everything LMC truck sells is at least $25 and shipping is high....most parts, even rubber parts are around $200 each...fenders can be bought for $100 but shipping is about $150 each...

It becomes an enormous expense and unless you are dedicated to completing the project, you can lose everything you put into it. In my opinion, an oem restoration is the most likely way to recover your investment....I love these trucks though...I love restoring mine and fixing it...and a lot of times I cuss so loud I am sure my neighbors wonder what is going on...but man, the K5 gets into your blood...if you have your heart set on it, then go for it...the 1st generation one are so rare...I think they made only 4000 each year in 1968-1970...it is a low number...compared to a 1974 when they made 40,000.

It is a rare vert and you could have a very nice ride to be proud of...even if it take several years to complete.

Go look at it...and also, I bet you could get a local mechanic to go with you and have a look at it for $100. Have him look it over and tell you a professional opinion of the condition. Another piece of advice...have the cash in hand...real green money has a way of making people change their mind on price...if he won't come off $1000, I doubt he will let $800 cash walk away.

Keep us informed, this is neat watching someone else go through wha I went through 6 months ago. :D

1972 Chevy Blazer K5 4x4 1 ton - $4900 (Powhatan)

There are several across the country, do a search on www.searchtempest.com

You could even get a bank loan and buy a nicer one...if it is in good shape and you have good credit, the Kelly Blue Book fair value on a nice K5 is around $8000.

That's how I bought mine, I borrowed the money from the bank, enough for the truck and shipping from San Diego to Alabama.

Once again, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure....money spent for a clean rust free truck is worth many times what you will have to spend to fix a bad one.

for lmc are you saying its 100 for fenders plus 150 for shiping or 150 for fenders shipped

ive looked at that one

i have been looking at k5s for a decent bit of time not really sure what i should do i would love to be able to do a restoration but not sure how much money i would be droping if it would even be worth it

Shipping for one fender is about $150....cost you about $250 for one fender...thereabouts...maybe more or slightly less.

Look at www.rockauto.com

Put the item in the shopping cart and let it show you the price + shipping

The way I look at it is like this....to get one restored real nice would average maybe $15,000...and that would be really nice like nearly new with a new drivetrain...

What can you get for $15000 new? a tiny egg car...:doah:

You can't get squat for $15000 these days...especially a 4x4 SUV...

Plus, you have a classic truck that is a rare beast. A nicely restored convertible Blazer will turn heads everywhere you go...not that I am into that, but I think it's a better value to put money into a restore than to buy a new car....that's just my opinion...but what do I know, I am a crazy Jaws fan who decided I had to have one of those things that the police chief drove...

Here is the price for a 1972 driver side front fender from LMC:

I believe that you save on shipping if you buy more than one thing at a time.

Now wait, a second, you say you don't have much money to fix it, so a $500 truck is a good deal? That doesn't make any sense to me. Sure, you can spend $500 for two fenders. But then what will you do? Prime them and paint the whole truck? That's probably $1000 for the cheapest paint job in town. What about the interior? What if the engine dies after a month? Another $1000 for an engine? Then the tranny dies? Another $1000? Do you have $5000 sitting around to "fix" everything?

If you don't, I'll second the "get a bank loan" idea. That was exactly what I did. I have a 1990 Blazer that needs lots of little things here and there. Paint, head gasket, tranny rebuild, tires, rust repair, new interior, etc. All said I could probably spend $6k to fix this truck and then other things will pop up. No one will give you a loan for that, and if they do it'll be a very high interest rate. Instead I talked to my credit union and they gave me a loan at 4.5% APR to get my truck from CA which needed (mostly) nothing. I paid to have it shipped out ($870) and have only had to spend about $200 on small fixes and tune up stuff (cap, rotor, wires, plugs, oil change, mirror) and some elbow grease to make the rear window work.

If you spend $500 on that truck just because it's a "good price" I think you are throwing $500 away.

Besides, if that truck was in great shape, you better believe it would have sold by now.

That truck looks like it has been sitting for a lot longer than the 2 years they state. The engine compartment looks like it has been sitting for 10 years. Without being able to see that in person, I'd pass too.

I would buy it for the interior if it was close to me....

idk my plan was if i bought a project truck i would buy a little at a time but i am starting to think best bet is to wait save money/bank loan and buy one done and maby when i am old one day i will restore one
