Thinking of Re-Gearing...What is good for me?

ehhh iono if I would go that far...for now since you are only going w/ 35's maybe stick w/ your 12b rear and 10b front...just my personal opinion but I'd fix the 4" lift block problem before I dropped time and money on a 3/4 ton swap.
Look around...I found a guy selling a 12b w/ 4.56's, a locker and disc brakes for like $400 locally...hit up your local craigslist and check it out. That...or just save up about $1,000 and have you guy put them in...you really can't go wrong...just decide (after some research) and go for it...you can't sit there and monday morning quarterback yourself in this hobby. :)

I just went from 3.08 to 3.73 by finding complete axles and doing the swap. I'm running 33's. I wish I went with 4.11's. 3.73 is a little too slugish for me.

I just dropped a chunk of change over the last three months with this "simple" axle swap. If you have the build bug, TAKE YOUR TIME!!!! I bought a rebuilt rear axle with 3.73's for $150 or $200 (a little pricey but it was 2 miles from my house) and a front axle for gas money to get it from CA to AZ. I then sold my old axle housings (kept the shafts as spares).

It took a couple of months to find the axles but it was worth the wait.

Once I started, I kept going: Chrome moly shafts, front locker, crossover, shackle flip (not in yet), and new Cherokee steering shaft. TOO MUCH $$$

Take your time, and look for guys swapping out for other options. You can find cheap and sometimes free stuff in the 10bolt/12bolt area. Many here run large tires that need the one ton stuff and are looking to get rid of their half ton stuff.

I am going to keep my eye out for them around craiglist and backpage.

I am fixing the rear block problem soon, I am doing the shackle flip, or get thoe $80 springs at that shop down in mesa (see thread in garage).

Anyways, I think 3/4 ton axels would be a good idea, I might eventually go 37's+ who knows, but I would be prepared for the future right?

Yeah, 3 spd automatic, so the TH350.

So 4.10 would be good for 35's? What if I need to put my 31's back on, is that too much power for this tiny wheels? Would they spin easily?

So all I need to do is replace the ring and pinon right? My mechanic said he would do it for 50 an hour, and it should only take 4-5 hours per axel, does that sound right?

I need 12 bolt gears for the rear, and I have 10 bolt in the front? Right?

I was looking at gears, and they said they fit camaros, does that matter? Are they made for certain vehicles or axels? I am confused..

And stupid question, but I need matching gears for front and back right?

Wow we put gears in my buddies 86k5 in bout 3 hours for both axles. im gona do mine here in the spring, u guys make it seem like a major deal. maybe we just got lucky with my friends. 1000.00 for gears blows my mind. i could see that if you were getting lockers. but just gears!?
Well i gotta get my sm465 installed first. good luck on the gears

That's about the going rate.

sly, so you're saying none of you guys knew how to properly setup gears? If so...you're VERY lucky. I've heard of people "doing it themselves" and really f-ing things up.

Not what i said. I'm just saying it never seemed like a major deal to ME! some people cant turn a wrench to save there life. It all depends on ur ability levels and knowing what u can and cant do. know your limits and keep that in mind.

Right, you have the mechanical apptitude and probably even some training or friends with training.

No offense to the starter of this thread but he didn't sound like he knew a whole lot about this whole thing. DEFINATELY not the type of person to attack something like this.

On another forum a guy tried to do his 14FF himself and ended up needing to borrow his dad's truck so he could take the 14FF to a garage to install his NEXT gearset after he crunched the first. Expensive f-up.

Setting gears up is not all that it seems, YOu just hafta have the right tools (trust me, tools help a bunch), but other than that, you gotta know the basics.... I can set the gears up for ya, but your looking at around the $65 a hour mark, thats $20 less than the shop i work at charges..(BTW< lockers, and different axle shafts does not add to that hours wise, since its all out and apart anyways... just let me know and we can set up a time... if you need any references just ask in the regional section, a few of the guys have had me set their junk up (even without the tools i just purchased)...Nate

yeah what's the cut off for carriers on 10b's and 14ff's?
Like I have 4.10's in my 14ff...can I run 4.56's/4.88's/5.13's etc?
Or does it depend on the thin/thick gear sets?

IIRC the 14BFF cutoff is 456, mine had 373's and a gov bomb, wanted a detroit and 488's so I had to find an open 456 carrier. You can use the 456 and down carrier w/the thick gear set. Cant remember what the 10b is.

Im just curious if I can put diffeent gears in my 10b/12b 3.08 to run 35's? or do I have to switch my whole axle as well?

i have a 10bolt rear and dana 44 and im gona put in 5.13 gears in them so im sure ul be fine

4.56 would be more offroad friendly but would make the rpms buzz a bit on the road.

4.10's would be more road friendly but loose a little low range ability offroad.

Wow, small axles for that low of a gear ratio. How big of tires are you planning on running?

"If you have to ask, you should pay someone to do it."

how about, "if you have to ask, you'd better have a spare vehicle to drive for a week."?

in my case, if i have to ask, it usually means the answer will be hard to find and it will give the average mechanic a headache. but, there are guys on here that make me look like an noob. who do you ask when you know everything?

Setting gears requires a lot of skill and patience to do it right.

this is true. i've done it, and it worked well, but if i found a good shop with a reasonable price, i might pay to have it done. it's not "hard" it's just tricky. tiny little adjustments make big differences.

So can I run 33s on 3.07 front gears and 3.08 rears? If not what gears should I get and do I need to change my axle out too?

Read the thread dasa, I asked the SAME question, your best bet is swapping out axels with 4.10 gears, it wouldnt be much more, and could withstand the stress better than 1/2 ton axels.
