So im pretty sure my Transmission just went out...

I was driving along and all of the sudden the truck would rev up but wouldnt go anywhere, i pulled over, tried all the gears, same thing, just revs up..

I bassicly idled back to my work parking lot, ill get towed home tonight, this is probably the worst thing that could happen at the worst time in my life..

I dont have 1000+ dollars to fix this, and i know **** all about transmissions..

That last part was me venting, sorry..

see what the fluid looks like...color wise and check for any particles in it.

i let it warm up and checked it, i didnt see any particals, it was full, but it was dark in color, not fresh looking by any means.

and what trans are we talking about here?
a 350 or 400, check the modulator on the trans, or the vacuum line from the modulator to the intake man.

does it smell burnt, or sweet?
Is it dark red/brown/black?

700R4 color was sort of brown. im at work right now so i didnt have to really look into it past checking the fluid, i think there was a faint burning smell.

I might be wrong tho seeing as its an old engine so that smell could have just been a hot engine.

did it scream, like metal on metal, or just stop working?
if its brown, you probably have overheated friction and steel clutches, and seals.
It could be a physically broken part like to prevent clutch engagement perhaps as well. I would drop the pan, and see if you have any hardparts in the pan....if you do, plan on a rebuild, if not, perhaps a pressure test could diagnos the outcome.

looks brownish to me, what do you think?

That ain't that bad... Apparent clutch dust in there. :D
I think yer pump failed.

I'm no Auto-trans pro., or anything.
But judging by nothing happening at all, I gonna say fluid ain't moving.

This may sound dumb, but is your shift linkage I proper working order?

i cant thank you all enough for the help with this, im gonna look into all of these options before i go find a new one.

another thing i can say about what i noticed was normally when i shift into reverse it shifts pretty hard and takes about 3 or 4 seconds, after this happened, you could still feel it shifting into reverse but it wasnt near as hard..

but it wouldnt go anywhere still.

that diagram makes me want to jump off a bridge, lmao!

Ok, no one else has said it, so I'm going to.

Does the truck roll in park?

Make sure the transfer case has not jumped out of gear.
