This cant be good

You should be able to check the pressure with a gauge too. That will tell you for sure.

If the vehicle is still moving, then the pump is still working - at least some - or no clutch would ever engage. The fact that it's revving higher is scary, as something must be slipping. I guess it could be the sprag or even the sprag in the converter.

Or is it just stuck in 1st gear?

The simplest pump test is to check fluid level. If it stays high with the engine running, then the pump is pure dead, or the TC isn't bolted on anymore. If the pressure was leaking off enough to let a clutch slip, it would be cooked with very little driving.

Its not stuck in any gears, when it happened i was in 3 or 4 gear, was going about 40 mph probably. The fluid was showing full when running.

Brian, seeing as there is no metal in the trans, that fluid don't look that bad, I would try a pressure test if you can...you would need a 500# gauge for that, and it would hook into the side of the trans where there is a threaded plug.

IT'S NOT WORTH IT... Believe me.

:haha::haha::haha:
:waytogo:

Mine just did the same thing and the plastic worm gear near the output shaft had broken. That caused a chain reaction into the core but would not go into first. Tranny guy ended up bulletproofing the entire thing due to some PO issues. Cost me 1400. But now this thing is great

Good luck!

1400 is out of the question for me, hehe. i budget is more like 300-400 tops!

You can rebuild it yourself if you take the time, and pay close attention with pretty basic tools. Some feeler gauges, basic sockets and blah blah. Pretty sure you dont need a special tool for installing the seals, like the Ford AOD does for example. You just HAVE to be CAREFUL installing the seals and putting them in the case, you will make a real :angry1: face when you put it all back together only to discover you tore a seal in a clutch pack and it slips. Been there, done that. Just take your time, and do a little research. With a little extra cash, you can get a few upgrades for it, Corvette servos, better clutches, shift kit, maybe a better sunshell, and not sure of the year cutoff, but the later model ones have a much better pump, and I would do that as well. If there is shrapnel in the pan, I would replace the converter too.

Another easy way to see if the pump is working, pull a cooler line off, if fluid is shooting out, the pump is atleast working.

thanks for the info, iv been staring at a diagram for 3 days now, also i wont have money for anything for about a month so i have plenty of time to research. unless i can find a solid deal on a used trans in the next few weeks i will have to fix it my self. spending over 1k isnt even an option.

Maybe I'm just semi-retarded when it comes to transmissions,,, most likely, I'll admit that, but I started tearing apart a th350 several years ago,,,,, got have way through it and gave up..

Realized I didn't have the tooling to complete the job. Sent it to a shop, in a box, in pieces, they rebuilt it for me, all was good afterwards. :D

Never attempted to tear apart a th700r4, figured they were more complex than the th350, which is supposed to be a very easy trans to rebuild :doah:
I can handle engines, transmissions, well, I gave up early on..

In the grand scheme of things, neither the 700/350 or 400 is difficult. But to the untrained eye its the craziest thing on the planet. If you just sit down, read a diagram and go slow with the flow, you can figure it out.

I can redo them autos, but I cant figure out a manual to save my life. :haha:

Good luck if you do it yourself. After I get a new one I'm thinking of trying to rebuild the old one if I don't have a core charge.

what do you not like about ca? i need to know! hehe

I moved out of Long Beach CA close to 30 years ago. I'm sure it's even worse now. But even when I was growing up there...

Crime
Smog Laws
Smog
Gangs
Taxes
Gun Control Laws
Traffic!! <--- I'm sure this is 10 times worse now.
Vehicle Registration Cost
Housing Cost

I was thinking of getting a kit from BTO and dropping it off with a local shop but after talking to them I learned that the 700s had multiple upgrade from GM. So instead I let them have free range with mine for the rebuild, GM upgrades and a few of my own.

If you are going to do it make sure you find out what all the upgrades GM made through the years. Good luck

Yeah im aware of a few upgrades, im going to drop it tomorrow morning, thanks for the luck wishes!

Any of you guys think putting some additives in there and changing the fluid would be worth trying before i try to get this thing out of there? or judging from what iv said so far would that be fruitless?

btw if anyone in the arvada denver area wants to waste some of their saturday or sunday to help me get this thing out of here, i would greatly apreceate it hehe. iv taken the drive shafts out so far but thats about it, kinda feeling sketchy on what to do next even tho iv watched a few videos and read a bunch. its just kinda daunting for a first timer...

I have all the tools we need i think, including air tools. i could prob throw like 50$ at you for your time as well.
