This cant be good

another thing i can say about what i noticed was normally when i shift into reverse it shifts pretty hard and takes about 3 or 4 seconds, after this happened, you could still feel it shifting into reverse but it wasnt near as hard..

That is not a good sign. That is a transmission on its way out.

It did the slow shift into reverse before all this happened?

If you need to get it home I have bought Lucas transmission fix and drove a truck home that wouldn't move previously. The trans was smoking hot when I got home because it was still slipping pretty bad

Ok, no one else has said it, so I'm going to.

Does the truck roll in park?

Make sure the transfer case has not jumped out of gear.

i checked that, i was afraid of it rolling into something, heh. no it sticks in park like normal.

yeah its been doing the hard reverse shift for 3 months now.

i have road side assistance so prob getting towed tonight.

Im no transmission guy by any means, but ive seen this happen b4 on a friend of mines k10 and it turned out to be that ALL of the torque coverter bolts had come out and it would just spin free (hence it wasnt attached to the flexplate anylonger). Not to expensive of a fix either. Just check to be sure

thanks for that info, im planning on diving into it the first weekend that its above 40 or so and not snowing. next 3 days here, snow and freezing. bah..

Really thinking about moving to California someday.

Did you rebuild it or just get a new one?

I havent decided which idea is best given what the problem may be..

Im just tired of the cold weather, hehe.

Since noone else has mentioned it I will, make sure the TV cable is SET correctly. A TV cable that is not set correctly will burn up a 700R4 in very short order. It could be as simple as the cable came off the linkage or even that the cable broke. :deal:

I went the cheap route, and picked up a used one.. I know, alot of people will tell you not to get a used one. but the cash situation I was in, I had to go that route. It worked fine.. but if you can afford it, whynot get a beefed up tranny.

I have thrown in lots of used transmissions. For the price, and the few hours of work, it's worth the risk. That or fix it right and throw an SM465 in there.

Its not a bad way to go ive always done that route. But seriously make sure your kickdown is adjusted right or yull burn that new one up.good luck man.

Ill make sure to check all of the given options here before i replace it, thanks for the help guys, heres to a warm day and no snow eh. :waytogo:

Must be in the water. My 700 just went out too. But I still have first and second after top end at second it revs and no go. The last time I this problem I dropped the pan changed the filter and fluid and it was fine for about another 1000 miles and the time for me to save the cash for a rebuild.

Let us know what route you take. I haven't made my mind up on local rebuild or order the BTO level 3.

Did you say you can kind of still feel it shift into reverse now? It just won't move?

Yes, i can feel it go into the reverse gear faintly, it used to shift pretty hard when going into reverse. but when i give it gas it just bearly moves back, same goes for all the other gears. 1 2 3 4, when you give it gas it just revs up and bearly moves along..

It seems like somethings come undone or maybe the pump gave out, there are just so many things it can seemingly be.

Sounds like a seal died inside somewhere. I was having issues with a rebuilt trans a few years back with the sluggish reverse engagement. Turns out it was one of the seals, don't remember which one now, but the trans guy told me it would eventually fail completely. So I took it back and he replaced all the seals with better quality ones.

B Dub, I would pretty well bet yours is dead. Mine did this with the original trans. It started out with light slipping between 2nd and 3rd gears, then one day it just gave up. It would only start out in 1st, then hit 2nd and would not go any further, just rev'd trying to go into 3rd, never would engage.

Shop around your local at transmission shops, get referrals from friends, relatives and whatnot, get the "feel" of the shop, if you will,, I've been to several shops I just didn't feel right having them work on my stuff. If it's too cheap, you're probably getting a shotty job or very minimal parts replaced.

I paid $850 to have my 700r4 rebuilt here in Phoenix, this after I tried going the cheap route with a $400 rebuild job that failed twice the same days it was installed. Turns out they really didn't do much cleaning of all the internals and valves, they just tore it apart, did a quick rinse and slapped in new clutches. The $80 rebuilder guy showed me everything as it was coming apart as to what the other shop did wrong and what they didn't do.

I have bought a used transmission from a local, former member of this site. that one got me 3 more years before it started to go out, I knew it was a time-buyer though and that was fine for me as I only paid $200 for it.

Me personally, I understand the money situation all too well, but I would find a way to either get a low mileage rebuilt unit, or just have yours completely redone for peace of mind in knowing it SHOULDN'T cause you any headache for quite some time afterwards.

Removing the trans yourself and taking it in for a bench rebuild is going to be your cheapest, rebuild option, a little more work on your part, but decent money savings.

Yeah the money issue is the biggest pain, im actually looking forward to figuring this one out as iv never had to deal with transmissions before so its going to be a good learning experience, if i cant figure out what the problem is my self by inspecting all the external possibility's i will move on to taking it out and tearing it down my self, if that fails, ill move on to looking for a rebuilder or a used option, i def have money limits so rebuilding it my self is gonna be the best option for me if i can pull it off.

It's either a pressure issue or the torque converter. If you can still feel it go into gear it's probably the converter

I could feel it going into reverse, but not so much with 1 2 3 4, nothing really happens with those.
